Book Description

July 4, 2012
WARNING: This book is a weapon. This book is extremely dangerous. This book is explosive. This book is illegal. This book could land you in jail! Broken Sword Publications proudly presents, ¡Ban This! The BSP Anthology of Xican@ Literature, an unparalleled survey of some the best Xican@ voices of the modern era. Santino J. Rivera, author and indie publisher, introduces readers to the most significant and compelling voices of the Xican@ movement since Message to Aztlán. Selecting the best literature available from barrios coast to coast, Rivera has created an anthology that in itself is an act of defiance to those who would ban books, censor culture and re-write history. This collection reflects both a dynamic and cohesive portrait of modern Xican@ literature - which is American literature. These are the stories for a new generation of revolutionaries. This groundbreaking anthology includes works by Francisco X. Alarcón, Gustavo Arellano, Lalo Alcaraz, Luis Alberto Urrea, Rodolfo Acuña as well as works from many new voices culled from the woodsheds of Neo Aztlán. ¡Ban This! The BSP Anthology of Xican@ Literature is a weapon of mass education. These are our stories and they deserve to be heard. This book is a tightly-packed tome of literary rebellion just waiting to be unleashed.

5.0 out of 5 stars These stories had to be told. Gracias, S.J. Rivera July 18, 2012
By R2R0
Format:Paperback
Santino J. Rivera has done it again and this time with the enlistment of 38 other Xican@ voices who stand together as one and say to anyone trying to silence and erase us, "You wanna ban books? Pues, orale,¡Ban This! These are our stories. They are American stories and they WILL be heard."

I don't know if Mr. Rivera knows exactly what he's created here but this book is destined to change the lives of many. Many youngsters, including my teenage kids, will read the words on these pages and feel levels of pride, enthusiasm and creativity they've never felt before. They will translate their emotions to words and share them with the world.

Gracias, Santino

5.0 out of 5 stars a Treasue of a book July 24, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
this collection of poems and stories is truly something to pass to the next generation. And I intend to do just that. There is something here for everyone. Passion. Humour. and plenty to ponder. BanThis! is the perfect book for these crazy times . History needs to be taught not hidden in boxes. My calendar says it's 2012 but I feel like it's 1959 when I read what some have done in states across the U.S. Do not fear the written word.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weapon of Mass Education July 24, 2012
Format:Paperback
¡Ban This! The BSP Anthology of Xican@ Literature edited by Santino J. Rivera is a timely and much needed book offering of new vibrant voices not only in Chicana/o Studies, but in American Literature as well. At a time when the state of Arizona devises wholesale laws to ban an academic discipline (Chicana/o Studies), Rivera proudly presents a defiant VOICE that will not be silenced. This anthology is a testament that Chicana/o history will not be banned. Chicanas/os once again are at the forefront of making HISTORY!!!

Included in this anthology are well known Chicana/o academics and writers, such as Rodolfo Acuña, Luis Alberto Urrea, Gustavo Arellano, Lalo Alcaraz, Mario Barrera, Francisco X. Alarcon, and Roberto "Cintli" Rodriguez. In addition, new voices in Chicana/o Studies emerge with the strong writings of Jehuniko, Lizz Huerta, Vincent Cooper, Gina Ruiz, Art Meza, and so many more outstanding up-and-coming scholars, writers, and artists.

in 1967, Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzalez crafted the epic poem I am Joaquin giving voice and an identity to a generation before, it is in this sense same spirit that Rivera crafts a collection of works that will inspire and define a new generation that continues the legacy of Chicana/o self-determination.

This book is a must in your collection. It is the voice of Aztlan yearning to be heard, and it will be heard!!!

Educacion es Poder!!!
