A Rare Find,
By zia'shan (Washington DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: ¡Pío Peep!: Traditional Spanish Nursery Rhymes (Hardcover)
It is so difficult to find good children's books in Spanish in the U.S. Most of them are simply Spanish translations of English language books. Pio Peep! is an excellent bi-lingual book containing traditional Spanish nursery rhymes and songs and English adaptations (I say adaptations because great care has been taken to preserve the rhythm and rhyme of the original). The illustrations are very well done too. I highly recommend this book to anyone raising children in a bi-lingual household.

Sweet and endearing,

Since my infant twins are Cuban-American, I have been looking for children's books that will teach them Spanish while also teaching them a bit of their heritage. This collection of Latin American nursery rhymes brings together a collection of sweet rhymes that also appear in English. I'm always interested to see how the translator of this work chose to translate the rhymes. Often, the translations are not word for word, so sometimes I feel like I am reading a new rhyme. The adaptations are as interesting as the original ones. The illustrations are as pretty as the rhymes. I will save this book for my twins to give to their children one day.

What a collection!,

This book is amazing! As a bilingual Pre-K teacher, I recommend this collection for every young class. The Spanish nursery rhymes are classics and the English adaptations help make the book even more enjoyable for bilingual readers. These poems make meaningful rhymes in both languages that are sure to delight!

My daughter and I are really enjoying this book. She loves that I can read a rhyme to her in Spanish and her Dad can read the same one to her in English. Sometimes we sing the rhymes. The drawings on each page are very nice. I'm sure we'll use this book for a very long time. I'm very happy with it.

This is a great Spanish nursery rhymes collection with English translations (not always literal translations, but something along the lines). I have checked it out from the library a few times and was glad to see it here at such an affordable price because i would love to just have it on hand all the time. My three year old loves it especially the rhymes i know the songs to :) (check on youtube)

I bought this book for my childcare person to read to my granddaughter. I wanted a book with authentic Spanish rhymes and this is one of those. (I did not want a book in which English children's rhymes are simply translated into Spanish) We have CD's with lots of these nursery rhymes in song form. My only critique is that I would have preferred a book with no English. The pictures are lovely.

This book gives such a wonderful array of Spanish rhymes and fingerplays. The illustrations are adorable. The families I work with recognized several of the rhymes, which is what I'd wanted - - - reminders to them about rhymes they could use to enrich their children's language development. There are cute, rhythmic English translations as well, but it's helpful to know that they are only based on the same theme, not at all literal translations.

This book definately lived up to my expectations. I bought it for my 2 year old son. Since we've started reading it he's been trying to rhyme all the time. It has a wide assortment of songs and rhymes that make our reading time together alot of fun. The hard cover is nice too because it makes it more durable.

Ryhmes in Spanish AND English!,
This review is from: ¡Pío Peep!: Traditional Spanish Nursery Rhymes (Hardcover)
Ten stars!! !! We are thrilled with this book! We have many traditional songs on other CDs, and it is just amazing wonderful to find pictures and words to match up with our songs! This is one of our favorite books! OH, and my opinion, but the English does not seem to match the Spanish translations perfectly. But it's nice, they still rhyme. I explain to the child, and usually just read the Spanish poems not the English, we are seeking to learn more Spanish.

Excellent bilingual collection of rhymes,
This review is from: ¡Pío Peep!: Traditional Spanish Nursery Rhymes (Hardcover)
Sometimes when reading nursery rhymes, especially in another language, I'm not sure of how the rhythm is supposed to go. The rhymes in this book are self-explanatory, written such that the rhythm flows with the words. Most of them are short and some of the others are songs. Combined with colorful, fun illustrations, this book keeps the attention of little ones.
I use the Spanish rhymes and see that the translation is not literal, but that the rhymes are maintained in both languages, which I think is more important than the meaning of specific words. I like that my husband can use the English version. This is a book well-worth buying as it can be used from the baby years and through preschool, if not beyond. It's my favorite rhyme book I've come across so far. |
