4.0 out of 5 stars A different perspective on Taiwan's subcontracting networks, July 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: «Boss» Island (American University Studies Series XI, Anthropology and Sociology) (Paperback)
Hsieh's _Boss Island_, written from a Marxist perspective, shows a great depth of understanding of the mechanics and social context of Taiwan's subcontracting networks. Hsieh is primarily concerned with industries operating in global markets whose base is the army of homeworkers which keep costs down. Unlike most studies, which look at firms or owners or particular industries, his major focus is the structure of labor. Well worth reading. Mike Turton
