So you're a member of the class of '77 and now you've bought into the whole middle class. You're in the car with your kids griping about something in the back. Put this CD on and all is fine. The kids can't even understand what Mark Smith is saying, and you can just get in synch with his noise and misanthropy. The Fall may not have been among the top tier of their era's bands, but Smith deserves face for sticking it out and maintaining a singular vision without descent to self-parody or boredom. He may like repetition, as the lead-off track insists, but it doesn't preclude an interesting artistic vision that makes for a fine compilation. And it drowns out the kids. I love them, but sometimes it's gotta be done.

I've never felt better in my life... onward to 50,000+1,

It's fantastic to see this cd on the shelves (though not many of my favs on here) but if this cd can find it's way into some younger hands through it's pricing and funny cover art in the Alt. section then that is a very good thing.
For anyone younger (I'm f-ff-ff-ff-forty) who may be new to the Fall congrats on buying this cd or discovering these reviews online. You must go forth and discover this bands catalogue. To my mind alternative in the 70's was not like alternative today - I don't mean musically - I'm talking about availability - punk and post-punk music was so far off the radio map that much of the music I listened to is lost to today's younger generation. I hope/assume that kids today know about the Clash/Pistols/Ramones but it's less likely they know PIL or Husker Du and it's far less likely they've stumbled onto the Fall. IF YOU HAVE - Don't stop here, head straight to Hex Enduction Hr. and then on to Slates and Grotesque or move forward to Nations Saving Grace or Wonderful and Frightening World. You'll discover one of the world's greatest musical experiments. Their music is as far ahead or behind current times as the Velvet Underground's was in 1967. My first discovery of the Fall was on Grotesque back in 1983 and it remains my favourite album of theirs (isn't that always the way). Thanks MES. To new fans, enjoy - You'll rush right out and buy a kazoo - everyone could and should join in. "Hi Mom, Gramme Friday" indeed!

(Not Just) Another Fall Comp.,
By Jacob Snodgrass (Worthington, Ohio United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong: 39 Golden Greats (Audio CD)
Well, if I had to assemble the 39 greatest songs by The Fall, I would have only picked ten of the songs that are on this comp., but that just goes to show how great The Fall is, because this comp. is still choice. It's probably a good starting point for people new to The Fall, but who knows? The Fall isn't for everyone, and even those it is for sometimes have to put in some time before it really clicks with them. All I can say to the neophyte is, give it a try, and if you sorta like it, then plug away--in the end it will be worth it. Maybe someday you'll be like me (and many other Fall devotees) and no other band will compare.
