I first encountered Jackie Newgent at a healthy cooking class she taught in Manhattan. It was the best cooking class I had ever taken. There was a whole lot of recipes that were divided amongst all of us there. She had an easy going attitude- what I call a "jazz attitude." What I mean by that is that she turned any "mistakes" into other possibilities so that everything worked. I felt there was no stress in her class, and frankly, that has not been the case in many of the other classes. She obviously knows so much about cooking and about healthy eating. At the end we ate an incredible smorgasbord of different and delicious things that we made. And, all of the dishes were low calorie and they were not that difficult to do.

From that class I was inspired to buy her "1000 Low-Calorie Recipes" cook book. I also bought a copy for my sister. So far I've made the following from it:

Autmn parsnip puree
Caramelized red, white and yellow onion soup
Mushroom herb sauté
Miso dressed vegetables
Banana nut smoothie
100 calorie dark chocolate chip cookies
Baba ghanoush
Ginger chicken , broccoli etc stir fry
Sticky Lebanese cinnamon chicken
Apple compote
Poblano corn soup
zesty lemon squares

Every single dish I've made, except one, has been incredibly good. I am a total believer in the talents of Jackie Newgent. By the way the one dish that I didn't like probably wasn't good because I changed the recipe so much. (I didn't have what I needed). Anyway, look at that list of stuff I've made so far!!!

The book is set up beautifully as well. It's easy to follow and it tells you all you need to know about the portions and calories, etc.

This may be the only cookbook I need to have in my kitchen. I've prepared several of the recipes already and each one is simply delicious. In addition to the great recipes, the book is packed with information to help readers understand HOW to cook and eat low calorie. It's packed with information to help even the most novice cook understand how to make low cal high in taste, how to omit the hidden calories without compromising flavor, how to shave fat and empty calories and add nutrients and simply ways to punch up flavor and nutrition in recipes but keep the calories in check. In addition to sharing 1,000 great tasting recipes, it helps readers learn the more about general nutrition principles for low calorie eating they can apply throughout the day.

In this latest book by the terrific RD chef, Jackie Newgent, you'll find more recipes than there are days in the year! What makes this book different from so many other cookbooks out there is that not only do the recipes look tempting and delicious, but they're created with nutrition and health in mind. The recipes incorporate a lot of common foods and ingredients, but integrate them with a special twist. I can't wait to try many of them out, and I'm sure my family will love them as much as I will! Thanks, Jackie, for another great cookbook! This RD gives it 5 stars!

This cook book is a great addition to my collection! The recipes are easy to follow and the recipes come out delicious. I have made a variety of recipes, from entrees to desserts to beverages and each has come out so tasty. Even my family, who is very skeptical about "healthy" food tasting like cardboard, loved everything I made. I can't wait for the summer to experiment with more of the refreshing cocktails and fresh salads. Yum!
