Grade 3-6?Using the 1994 Tour Du Pont (held in the eastern United States) as an example, Hautzig describes a professional-cycling stage race. He explains the teamwork; strategy; and stages (time trials, flat, and mountain stages) involved in this type of event, with special terms highlighted in yellow in the text. Although it's hard to spot some of the riders mentioned in the captions, the photographer utilizes a variety of angles and perspectives to convey the speed, strategy, and struggle of the cyclists as they cover various types of terrain and try to win (or help their leader win) the race. The support crews who provide food and mechanical and medical help are also included. The full-color photos are sharp and crisp, with understandable blurring when the pace warrants it. They are, however, surprisingly clean?they show consistently clear and sunny weather with no hint of the crashes and injuries that can occur. Although not a history of the sport or its personalities, nor an in-depth look at life on the professional racing circuit, this book will help spectators understand just what goes on in this type of race. A brief list for further reading mentions books and magazines that can update readers on current events. You have just got to hand it to the author of this book he has managed to cover this topic in both illuminatory detail alongside top notch story telling. As an experienced cyclists myself I can to a degree relate to the incredible athleticism of the cyclists but the truth is that this book goes further in to the pain and anguish of the riders than you sometimes would like, but the lyrical writing and gripping nature of the storytelling pulls you out the other side exhausted and exhillerated - I almost felt as if I had cycled the 1000 miles myself!!! A great book, but don't just take my word for it YOU MUST get this book if you are vaguely interested in riding or sport in general.
