Book Description

3,000 Pulses Later: A Memoir of Surviving Depression Without Medication describes how, as a successful advertising executive, wife, and mother with a seemingly ideal life, Martha Rhodes succumbed to depression and overdosed on Xanax and alcohol in an unsuccessful suicide attempt. The memoir describes her challenges with untreated, drug-resistant depression and her struggle to find an alternative to the drugs that failed to relieve her symptoms.

After a grueling stay in a psychiatric ward and many months of trial-and-error medications, Martha pursued TMS, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation—the FDA-cleared, safe and proven-effective alternative to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and the ineffective drugs her doctors prescribed.

3,000 Pulses Later shares how the road back to health with TMS returned her to an even better place than where she started. She now manages her depression with TMS therapy—and without the side effects attributable to antidepressant medications.

5.0 out of 5 stars TMS Works! July 18, 2013
By Ichabod
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've had my "3,000 Pulses " of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and know it works. Like the author, Martha Rhodes, I've taken numerous prescribed medications, and some have worked for a while. Ms Rhodes made an almost successful attempt at suicide, and she movingly describes her experiences in two psychiatric hospitals. After seriously considering suicide, a psychiatrist advised me to spend "at least five days" in a hospital. I didn't. After hospitalization and seeing a variety of of psychiatrists, she remained seriously depressed. Like the author, I tried TMS and now feel free of depression. She quit her drugs before treatment, and I will be off mine very soon. Ms Rhodes writes very well and is a worthy proselytizer for TMS. On her web sight, which continues her story after publication of "3,000 Pulses," Ms Rhodes is a sincere and effective advocate for TMS, and is responsive to questions about the process. After a great many purchases from Amazon.com I've been remiss in reviewing any of them. I review "3,000 Pulses" because I feel i is a realistic account of a remedy for a dangerous condition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Story for Anyone Who Wants to be Inspired November 19, 2013
By Nora
Format:Kindle Edition
Martha Rhodes’ powerful story on the stages of her depression and how it affected her, her family and her friends provides powerful examples of the importance of belief, determination and sense of self-worth to our success in life. 3,000 Pulses, Martha’s story of her depression and her struggles with doctors and insurance, is at once beautiful and heart-rendering. As an extremely capable woman, Martha also suffered from depression. Her tale of the effects of medicine on her mind and body will chill your soul, but her fortitude in securing alternative treatment and her determination and love for her family will warm your heart. Whether you have suffered depression or know someone who has––or if you just want to read a beautiful story of success, you can’t miss with 3,000 Pulses.

Because it is a true story and so well written. The author tells it all and it is a wonderful book for anyone
who suffers from severe depression or anyone who has a loved one who is. I do have my daughter and she is
taking these treatments and she loved this book, I can see a difference in her in just 3 weeks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hopeful patient of tms May 18, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have suffered from depression for as long as I can remember I've tried medication after medication, lived with the awful side effects (weight gain, no sex drive) throughout. I'm 56 this year and have no real outside reason for depression. I have great things happening in my life that I just can't get up about ~ first grandchild on the way, last child's wedding. I actually dread them because everyone can see I'm not happy like I should be. I was just searching the internet and found out about TMS therapy and that my insurance company may cover the treatment. Within an hour I found your book and downloaded it. I have an information appt in the morning. I finished your book in two days so I would be prepared. Bless you for writing your book. It has given me the hope that there may be happier days ahead.
