5.0 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Schaum's Outline, January 11, 2010
By
Ronald W. Satz (Trevose, PA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As is clear from my previous reviews of other Schaum's Outlines, I'm a big fan of the solved problem format. For biology, this means drill in the use of biological terminology, rather than in mathematical computation (except for genetics); you might want to have the Academic Press Dictionary of Science and Technology on hand while reading through the Bernsteins' book. The essay questions are answered in the usual Schaum's manner, but the objective questions have blanks (sometimes not quite long enough) for the reader to fill in; the answers are at the end of the corresponding chapter. There are 56 chapters arranged into these parts: Chemistry of Life, Cells, Molecular Genetics, Inheritance, Evolution, Diversity of Life, History of Life: Major Patterns, Plants: Form and Function, Animals: Form and Function, and Ecology. The writing is clear and concise; it's better, in this regard, than one of the competitor books, REA's The Biology Problem Solver (although the REA book is better in one area: genetics). The only problem I found with which I disagree is 54.48 on the so-called man-made "global warming." There is no index, but the Table of Contents serves as one; it's very detailed. Illustrations and typography are fine. Recommended for students and graduates, alike.
