Hot Dance Mixes from a British Techno Pioneer,
By Tom D. "NightOwl" (Detroit MI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 000: The World of (Audio CD)
This is a classic early techno/dance album that unfortunately seems out-of-print. Peter(Baby)Ford was a major innovative figure in the British scene around the early 90's. Techno had crossed the ocean from its birthplace in Detroit and found fertile ground in England. From there it crossed to Europe, finally to come back to the USA in the form of compilation CD's from England, Belgium, Germany, etc., causing many to assume that techno was a European invention. Baby Ford's work in this period is much different than what he's doing now, which is minimalist electronica. The songs on this CD are dense, psychedelic dance mixes that will make your feet very happy. "Children Of The Revolution", a cover of a song also done by the Violent Femmes, is worth the price of the CD alone. If you're inteseted in early techno, roots of techno, etc., this CD is right up your alley.

OK, I'm going to give away my age a little. I saw BFord open for Erasure during the "Wild" tour. A buddy of mine went because we were both into the "techno" scene at the time. This is before Moby became the face of techno. So it was all very underground. BFord put on a GREAT show. IMO he was better than Erasure. So I pulled this disc out during a drinking session and was instantly flooded with memories of my first year out of high school. Wow...what a great album. How is it this guy isn't on the cover of electronic music magazines today? Well one reason is he never seemed to follow up the album with anything substantial. I think he did a couple of 12-inches, but nothing noteworthy. He sort of faded into obscurity. If you can get your hands on this album, it really does stand the test of time (most techno does not). The reason this album is still good is that Ford wrote songs, not just blips with a backbeat.
Itunes doesn't have this, neither does eMusic. But if you can find it, it's certainly worth upwards to $30 to own. peace |
