Book Description

December 2, 2003
From the unique 10th-century manuscript of Beowulf to Sylvia Plath's poem "Ariel," this beautifully illustrated book presents the panorama of more than 1000 years of literature in English through original manuscripts from the British Library's unparalleled collection. In addition to manuscripts of some of the most celebrated literary works in English, such as Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, and Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway, the book reproduces poems, romances, short stories, novels, letters, and diaries by Malory and Shakespeare, Swift and Pope, Coleridge and Wordsworth, T.S. Eliot and Dylan Thomas, to name just a few of the 100 authors here.

Presented in large color reproductions, the manuscripts offer fascinating insights into the world of the writer at work and often reveal major corrections made in the course of writing. Chris Fletcher's engaging text provides an overview of each author's life, writings, and times and explains the significance of the manuscripts and their importance to understanding the works. From the grandest of narratives to the slightest of couplets, the manuscripts represented here provide a vibrant and immediate view of English literary history.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Fletcher, curator of literary manuscripts at the British Library, brings the originals of several gems in the library's collection to a worldwide audience with this handsome coffee-table book. This is one case in which the adjective coffee table carries no pejorative connotation. Fletcher's arrangement of excerpts from original manuscripts cries out for leisurely perusal. Each spread begins with a brief sketch of the life and significance of the author, then offers a carefully reproduced bit of manuscript on the facing page. You can view the opening page of Beowulf (with burned edges from a 1731 fire), a draft from Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dal loway, a page from Dickens' Nicholas Nickleby in the author's "bold and bounding hand," and a portion of Sylvia Plath's "Insomniac." Virtually every famous British author is represented (the Shakespearean offering, a little disappointingly, is from The Book of Sir Thomas More). This handsome volume will have great appeal for bibliophiles and lovers of English literature. Trygve Thoreson

Review

""This book provides a fascinating document to the changes in writing styles. It is as valuable to read in historical order as it is to dip in to. Anyone with an interest in literature, historical manuscripts or the stories behind the stories will find something to attract them here." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
