Excellent text, horrible format,
By NIC (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 5,000 Years of Textiles (Five Thousand Years of Textiles) (Paperback)
This is an excellent textile history survey and a welcome addition to any costume/textile library. However, the changes the publishers have made in producing this edition are deplorable (check the dimensions in the product specs). The book is much smaller than the original edition and difficult to handle when one is reading and taking notes. The font is miniscule, probably about 6 point, and makes reading difficult and unenjoyable. The illustrations - which in the older edition are wonderful - are scaled down to such a small size that their impact and usefulness is diminished considerably. Publishers should keep in mind when they are making changes in format to cut costs that the reader's experience does not suffer.

Great reference, but wish it was a little larger,
This review is from: 5,000 Years of Textiles (Five Thousand Years of Textiles) (Paperback)
I had to buy this book for a world textiles survey course, but it's interesting and useful enough that it will definitely be staying on my reference shelf for many years. Each chapter provides a good overview of the history and tradition of textiles in many parts of the world, and there are enough pictures to keep it interesting. However, my main complaint is the size of the book-- many pictures of excellent textile examples should have been given much more space, and the text is pretty tiny. The book is full of good information though; just be prepared for headaches or tired eyes if you spend too much time reading it!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 5,000 Years of Textiles (Five Thousand Years of Textiles) (Paperback)
As a textile artist and a researcher in weaving, this book was recommended by several people. When I got it, I was amazed at the depth of the detail and yet how interestingly it was written. All too frequently, reference works are dry and unappealing, but that's not something you can about this book!

Editor Jennifer Harris at the time of publication, Deputy Director and Curator of Textiles at the Whitworth Art Gallery, University of Manchester, England.
To describe this book would take a book. It covers different textiles from ancient societies to present day. There are twenty-four experts that describe not only techniques but the meaning of the art in each culture. My favorite section is the first chapter that shows different types of looms. I was a little disappointed not to find any drafts; however the book is concentrating on culture. This book also has a list of further reading and an extensive glossary. The color plates alone are worth the purchase price.

Very small print,
This review is from: 5,000 Years of Textiles (Five Thousand Years of Textiles) (Paperback)
This contains very small print and few color photos which is necessary for this so you might want the larger version.
