I have purchased copies for family members and recommended to others. Good food, easy to follow, good variety and provides nutritional information per recipe for those of us who want/need to see that kind of thing. If you like Soups and Stews, you won't be dissapointed.

Delicious recipes for everyday living. This is my go-to book for easy soups and stews. The recipes are great American-style dishes, with easy-to-find ingredients. The chapter organization of the book makes sense, and the index is thorough. There are no photos or drawings, but I have not felt the need to see any. I have given it to each of my adult children who also love it. It would be great to have it published with a spiral binding. Great job authors!

Got me excited about cooking.,
This review is from: 1,001 Delicious Soups and Stews: From Elegant Classics to Hearty One-Pot Meals (Paperback)
Every recipe I've tried out of this book has been so delicious! It's really gotten me excited to cook again. I had started to distrust recipe books because I can't read user reviews on the individual recipes... Well you don't need them for this book!
Navigation can be tough as others have said. Mark your pages folks! You may never find the page with that intriguing soup on it again if you don't. I find it funny that the reviewer who didn't like the book was complaining about substitutions in one of the non-soup/stew recipes. It's a soup book!

I love this book. Who knew I'd turn into a soup-a-holic! I have given this book as a gift to several people who have enjoyed my soups and stews. Varieties range from a delicious Seafood Risotto to a Florida avacado chowder and of course many traditional things like chicken noodle and creamy tomato. Many ethnic soups are featured too. One plus is the nutrition info for each recipe and a great majority are reasonable in calories and fat. My daughter is a vegetarian and husband does not eat red meat. No matter- I found tons of things to accomodate them. One note, there is a 1,001 slow cooker recipe book in this series. It is probably 80% these recipes. That was a great disappointment. The crock pot does not do the job that you need for these soups.

Deceptive Title,
This review is from: 1,001 Delicious Soups and Stews: From Elegant Classics to Hearty One-Pot Meals (Paperback)
I've never before been angry over the purchase of a book. Disappointed? Yes. Angry? No. Until now.
Although the consumer is given no indication anywhere except for the copyright page, this is a Low Fat soup cook book. It's previous title was, in fact, "1,001 Low Fat Soups and Stews", changed no-doubt to boost sales. Had the book been properly labeled, I wouldn't have been as incensed - I own several low fat / low calorie cook books that I am quite pleased with. Instead, the "traditional" recipes in this book call for low-sodium this and fat-free that. It even has the audacity to include a recipe for Tiramisu without the mascarpone because no fat-free mascarpone is readily available. On the rare occasion where a recipe does call for a full-fat dairy product, I get even more concerned - why have they left the ingredient in? Was it too awful without it? Have they changed the proportions so that it didn't matter? I absolutely distrust every recipe in the book. Distrust aside, it's also horribly organized (though the index is quite nice). Tortilla Soup, for example, is included in two variations over 100 pages apart - one in the "Lunch and Dinner Soups" and the other in "Melting Pot Soups". Vegetarian chilis aren't listed in chapter 4, "Chili", but rather in chapter 12 "Vegeterian Stews". All of that being said, the recipes aren't bad. Several of them are quite good. Had I purchased this book under its original title, I probably would have given it 4 or 5 stars. Unfortunately, I can't get over the feeling of being swindled. Hopefully this review will let you know what you're getting in to with your purchase so that you'll be significantly happier than I was. |
