With a slew of more notable shooters set to be released around the same time as "Quantum of Solace," it was to be expected that not much attention would be paid to the latest "007" title. And that is a pity. Especially for those gamers who've had their fill of aliens and beige-hued war zones. The Playboy-esque high-style of Bond's latest adventure might be just what...

3.0 out of 5 stars Unremarkable shooter
I generally enjoy 1st-person shooter games (especially the more stealthy, "thinking" games such as the Hitman Trilogy (Includes Blood Money, Silent Assassins, and Contracts)), but I wasn't very impressed with this one. The game basically walks you through all the missions, with prompts telling you what to do when, thereby decreasing whatever amusement one could...

This review is from: 007 Quantum Of Solace (Video Game)
With a slew of more notable shooters set to be released around the same time as "Quantum of Solace," it was to be expected that not much attention would be paid to the latest "007" title. And that is a pity. Especially for those gamers who've had their fill of aliens and beige-hued war zones. The Playboy-esque high-style of Bond's latest adventure might be just what they're looking for.

Though the graphics aren't quite textured or shaded as nicely as they could have been, they serve their function in conveying the elegant atmosphere which makes up the secret-agent mystique. When you're running around the rooftop of an opera house with a silenced sniper rifle, or engaged in a sub-machine gun firefight in the Romanesque spa of a luxury hotel, you can't help but feel that your coolness factor just rose a couple of notches. And the gameplay weaves seamlessly into these settings. You can take cover behind just about any object, triggering a toggle from your default first-person perspective to a comprehensive third-person view of Bond and his surroundings (think "Rainbow Six")--extremely useful when facing flanks of enemies that would otherwise overwhelm you. "Takedowns" are useful tactics for silent killings, or when you're out of ammo and the option of reloading just wouldn't be quick enough. The only complaint I have with this feature is that often times when you're facing two or more enemies in close quarters and you go for a takedown, you're then spun around and left facing a different direction, and if you're not quick in figuring out exactly what direction you need to turn back to in order face the remaining foe(s), you're pretty much dead.

Unlike most other shooter titles, all the action takes place while on foot. There are no vehicle pursuits. However, there is a point in the game when you shoot from a mounted machine gun on a helicopter, but the copter is grounded, having just crashed. However, the battles on foot were engaging enough that I personally didn't even realize this until after the game was over. But it's worth mentioning for those who may be partial to vehicle gameplay.

In the end, the only real complaint I'd have is that I wish there was more. You could complete the game in under six hours on your first go-around, and when it's over you're left wishing there was at least a few more hours worth of game. But then again, if you're left wanting more, what you did get probably wasn't all that bad of a thing. It certainly wasn't in this case.

4.0 out of 5 stars Call of Solace, November 18, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: 007 Quantum Of Solace (Video Game)
When i first heard the new James Bond game release was going to be built around the Call of Duty 4 engine, i've been waiting eagerly to get my hands on it.

Offline, it's an amazing game. This game jumps back and forth between the events of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. The levels are very detailed. The enviroments are more destructible than Call of Duty 4, which definately adds to the full Bond expirence. Some levels have diverted dramatically from the movie. Such as La Chiffre's abduction by Obono includes the hotel being secured by his militia. I understand that between the two movies, they needed to expand for a better game expirence. Levels that were closer to the movie scenes were amazing. The sinking apartment in Venice couldn't have been pulled off any better, in my opinion. The game incorporates a third person view for around the corner shooting like in the Rainbow Six franchise. Another added feature that definately improves the gameplay. One feature i did not care for was the QTE events. Buttons flash on the screen, you must quickly respond or risk losing a hand to hand fight. Most QTE is done while in close quarters, and is up to the player how little or how much it's utilized. The boss sequences require the QTE system, but seems more entertaining than previous bond games with the generic helicopter or dual rocket launcher wielding soldier.

Sadly, one hindering factor in my opinion is the multiplayer. Not nearly as crisp as Call of Duty 4. You earn cash per round to purchase your choice of weapons, upgrades, and special abilities. I like the freedom of choosing what to get next, rather than suffering through several firearms and perks you could care less to ever use. Various modes seem like they were borrowed from the Metal Gear Online series, along with the classic free for all and team death match. Over all, characters look and feel clunky. The learning curve is harsh because of the buy-what-you-want system for more expirenced and aggressive players. Overall, i think the multiplayer was not polished over to make the release date.

PROS:
-CoD4 Graphics engine
-Great offline level designs
-Levels chalk full of enemies to compete with a Bond movie body count
-Added over the shoulder cam to fire around corners and blind fire is definately what CoD4 was lacking.
-Most levels are very fast paced, adding to the Bond expirence

CONS:
-Online Multi-player is definately lacking
-The "hacking" sequence of unlocking doors gets rather old very fast
-The gun selection seemed fairly small compared to previous Bond games
-No real special bonuses after completion of the game such as unlocked guns
-The final stage's high difficulty is ridiculously unbalanced from the rest of the game.
-Fairly short. Game was beaten on medium difficulty within two (long) sessions.

Overall, i highly recommend this game offline. Honestly, a lot about this game reminds me of the original Goldeneye 64. The levels are extensive with tons of villians between you and the objective. The physics, destructible enviromets, and overall gameplay layout make you want to replay levels over and over again. EA could've spent more time on certain aspects, but compared to other movie based games rushed to coeincide with the theatrical release, this definately could have been much worse. DO NOT buy this game if you're looking for solid online multiplayer, very long first time through gameplay (such as RE4), or can't play a game again once you've beaten it. If you can enjoy a well made FPS, playing the levels again and again you won't be disapointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the money, November 7, 2008

Best bond game since Goldeneye.

I love the third person playing. You can set you target and then shoot. It is nice because you feel like you are really in the action, and can take sometime setting up until a grenade is throne where you are hiding.

Only problem with the game is that you can't play multiplayer just in your home with others on the one playstation. You can only play multi online. I wish these guys who design these games would keep that aspect into the multiplayer. Not everyone plays online all the time. What are suppose to do when you have friends over. I guess we will have to play Madden or other sports games becasue they undertand that concept. This is the only reason this game is getting four stars, or I would give it five.

I bought this game in 2008 and it sat in my backlog until this month. I decided to play it and I'm shocked that I let such a good game sit for so long. The graphics aren't the best but it does have some nice bright in dept colors. The controls are the similar to the Call of Duty series but modified slightly. The 3rd person cover view works perfectly and makes the game much more interesting. This uses the same cover system Gears of War uses. Not too sure why this game is so underrated but I'm guessing people wanted something amazing like the N64 was but it didn't meet their expectations but it did for mine. The shooting was fun and the storyline didn't hold your attention for you to watch the entire clips so i usually skipped them. Other than the lack of a good storyline this game was worth the money i paid for; Now this game is very cheap and worth being played through. I still play the multiplayer and it's pretty fun and addictive.

4.0 out of 5 stars (8.3) - Review - Quantum of Solace - Treyarch and Activision Hit the mark!, May 31, 2010

James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace

is a solid game. I would very much recommend this for a purchase as it only about 10$ now.

Solid graphics ( a little old) but good, great gun-play, and the 007 story is pulled of with a bang.

It has flaws and some game-play issues that keep it out of the elite, no worries, you will enjoy this game.

You like fun and engaging shooters you will be pleasantly surprised!

First of all this is definitely not worth the full $60. As one reviewer mentioned, you do feel like you're being cattle-herded to the end. It's a first person shooter and nothing more. Since its a game based on a movie not yet released (Quantum of Solace was released after the game I think) much of the story is vague and often lacking.

Is it worth $15? Absolutely. In fact, thats a bit of a steal. I would say it was worth $25 at least. The visuals are good, the sound is great and the controls are solid. The real star for me however, are the guns. Have you ever played a game with guns and wished you could put sound suppressors on them as you pleased? Well you can in this game. Virtually every weapon, except 1 or 2 (shotgun... duh), has a silencer that you can attach or remove when you feel like it. I absolutely love the sound of a silenced gun!

If you want a great FPS thats dirt cheap, then I strongly recommend this game.

Its simple but fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Two Films in One Game, November 26, 2008

Darryl R (San Antonio, TX) - See all my reviews
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: 007 Quantum Of Solace (Video Game)
This addition to the 007 game series is a worthy one. It is played in a movie point of view from the get-go, taking off from the end of "Casino Royale" and following the "Quantum of Solace" script almost word-for-word. What I really like about it is even though it is played as if it were the two movies, it tells stories from other points of view than Bond's, such as Mi6 and the villians. They also placed the majority of the "Casino Royale" missions in as flashbacks, which makes a really neat double storyline. As far as the main game is concerned, it is a great buy and even though it is quick to beat, you won't have any hesitations about going back and playing it again at a higher difficulty.

There are a lot of limitations though, and many of the perks and gadgets from the EA series of 007 are gone. Activision took over the series well, but they left out some stuff Bond fans will want. The animation, while extremely realistic, is somewhat lacking in the graphic violence. I never saw any blood of any kind when taking out enemies, and some of the scenes in the actual films were infinitely better with blood than the game's take on it without. The weapons are extremely detailed, but low in quantity. I only used about ten weapons throughout the entire single player game. Also, there are no vehicle missions of any kind - so no you can't drive the beautiful Aston Martin. That was a big disappointment for me. Much of the single player game is in what I call "movie mode," which is when it shows Bond in third person walking on ledges and avoiding enemies. The action during these moments is very limited, and it only asks you to press an occasional button to do anything at all. While it is neat to watch, you feel limited playing Bond and will feel like you should be doing more. Luckily the majority of the game is in first person, so that's not a huge bother.

Being Activision, you'll find the multiplayer to be almost an exact replica of "Call of Duty 4," but without a lot of the extra goodies. It is by far the best multiplayer on a Bond game, though, but don't expect everyone to be Bond in a free-for-all because it won't allow it. Overall it's a great game and worth your money, and I'm glad I bought it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quantum of Solace Impressions, November 17, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: 007 Quantum Of Solace (Video Game)
Overall this is a fun game. It is your basic linear shooter with scene after scene of killing bad guys (with some stealth mixed in). There is nothing revolutionary about it. It has some quick-time events, though thankfully not many, unless you take-down every enemy (clicking the right analog stick when right next to them). The game also utilizes a cover system (third person, i.e. GoW) that allows you to easily kill enemies (but sometimes the AI is smart and will try to flank you).

It took me around 5-6 hours to beat this game. It is a pretty short game. I played on the normal difficulty (or 2 out of 4) and found it to be extremely easy. Looking for more of a challenge I then played and beat the game on the hardest difficulty. That took a little longer, but only because enemies instantly kill you if you don't utilize the cover system.

The graphics are on par with most games today and look good because of the COD4 engine.

I have played some multiplayer online, and it is pretty fun. Instead of leveling up like COD4, you earn credits for purchasing upgrades (new weapons, grenades, sidearms, extra ammo, etc.). There are several game modes including basic deathmatch, bond evasion, teamwork, and golden gun.

If you are interested in the game I would recommend renting it, or buying it when it drops in price. I'm a big Bond fan, so I really like it, but I'm guessing not all will feel the same way. Also, so far all of the trophies/achievements are very easy to obtain. The ones that will take the most time all relate to multiplayer. It's hard to compare this to Goldeneye. Graphics-wise, it is obviously better. Other than that, I don't think it is any better. It's pretty hard to beat Goldeneye.

Its a fun FPS that pretty much goes right down the story line of the movies. The graphics are ok, the controls are not bad and its just plain fun playing 007. At this price, its a no brainer. I am waiting for James Bond 007: Blood Stone to drop and will pick that up because its supposed to have a great storyline. Anyway, online play is OK. There were still people playing online as of January of this year. Anyway, a fun game, especially at this low price.
