Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The authors who gave readers 1,001 Reasons to Love Golf have turned their rose-tinted lens on America, and the result is this amusing, relentlessly upbeat illustrated gift book, which is decked out in blues, reds, whites, stars and stripes. Those who have a healthy sense of patriotism will enjoy perusing these pages, reading about great leaders like Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson (both of whom make the top 60) and remembering simple indulgences like apple pie, a ride in a Chevrolet Corvette or "mulled cider at Christmas." The list of foods goes on and on; indeed, the authors name everything from Fig Newtons and "white bread sandwiches with a big glass of milk" to Kool Aid, cornbread and "creamed chipped beef on toast," giving the impression that, if nothing else, readers should love America for its food. Great athletes and "immortal" movie stars like Jean Harlow and Robert De Niro also make the list, along with numerous sites (Yellowstone National Park, The World’s Largest Catsup Bottle, etc.) and sounds (like "barbershop quartets" and the "howl of a wolf deep in the forest"). Despite the authors’ assertion at the beginning of the book that the list of reasons to love America is "endless," one gets the impression that they were scraping the bottom of the barrel when they came up with these dubious selections: "the ‘pffft’ sound that accompanies the opening of a can of Budweiser," the "Boeing G-52 Stratofortress" and "the dry song of the washboard." Nevertheless, this book succeeds in doing what the authors hope it will, which is serve as an "inspiration to discover other things to love about our great country." After perusing this book, readers will undoubtedly come up with a few of their own reasons to love America.

Just the sort of title that publishers love, so much so that Stewart, Tabori & Chang have trademarked the words '1,001 reasons to love...' so expect to see more of these books. The six chapters, Land of the Free, American Experience, From Sea to Shining Sea, Made in America and the American Dream, use the basic reason text but frequently expand it into detailed explanations and additional listings so the book is not just a thousand lines of type and some pictures.

It really is a delight to look through thanks to co-author Mary Tiegreen who designed it. The 1,001 reasons, of course, easily lend themselves to a pictorial treatment but the several hundred images in the book make them all come alive. For example, reason 84: Uncle Sam, uses six colorful renderings of him including the James Montgomery Flagg version, reason 582: The fifty great states that make up the United States of America, uses fifty of those nostalgic large-letter postcards with the name of each state. Spreads frequently have a collage of photos and vintage graphics all beautifully blending together.

You might think that some of these reasons are sort of superficial but why not? The authors have covered everything from the serious, reason 13: Lincoln's Gettysburg Address to the frothy, reason 619: Idiotville, Oregon (included in a list of unusual town names). Surely it all adds up to the optimism and diversity of the Nation.

Overall I think it is a handsome book that is worth looking through frequently.

What this photo-rich book most reminds me of is a cross between America A to Z: People, Places, Customs, and Culture and 14,000 Things to be Happy About.: Revised and Updated edition. (In actual fact there are rather more than 1,001 things listed: to take just two examples, Entry #439, "Unforgettable American Films," includes 87 plus the Dirty Harry series, and #440, "Hollywood's Immortal Actors," over 200.) There are five chapters, "Land of the Free," "The American Experience," "From Sea to Shining Sea," "Made in America," and "The American Dream," each subdivided into five or more loose groups, and ranging from #1 (simply "Freedom") to #1001 ("The unending belief in the American Dream"), plus a two-page appendix of "A Few More Reasons." From "Five things we should never take for granted" (the right to vote, freedom of speech, assembly, and religion, and strength in our diversity) to especially notable Presidents and "Pioneers, Patriots & Legends," to "Living in the USA" and "Classic American Food," to "American Style," "Gatherings, Groups, & Get-Togethers," TV and movies, sports legends, inventions, music, writers and artists, and of course the wondrous sights we can see from north to south to east to west, it's all here--iconic people, places, things, and pastimes--all the things that make the USA the unique place it is, a leader still in so many aspects of life and a magnet for people from every part of the world. No matter whether you're a proud flag-waver or a cynic, this book will reaffirm--or reignite--your faith in our country.
