5.0 out of 5 stars Great for those who love golf AND those who don't!
*****
This is a beautiful book about things to love about the game of golf. It is a nice-sized book (about 7 X 7 and almost and inch and a half thick) full of gorgeous pictures, quotes, facts, and fillers about golf---and why so many men and women love it. If you love golf, you will undoubtably enjoy it. If you WONDER why people love golf, you will discover it...

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice photos, but a flawed book
So there I was, sitting in my local Barnes & Noble, skimming through what appeared to be a great new coffee table golf book, giving both the casual and die-hard golfer 1001 reasons to love the sport, complete with great photos from around the world. Some sample reasons: "To play golf with my dad," with photo of father & son; "To play the Old...

I do not golf, but I enjoyed the book so much; I would expect that others would do who don't play, and that it could give them an appreciation for this wonderful sport.

I received it in the mail yesterday and spent several hours reading the whole book all at once today---I didn't want to put it down. I look forward to reading it again and again. The parts I enjoyed the most were the exerpts from old golf books about the sport, written in exquisite language.

The beauty of the book makes it well worth the full price. However, it is a great buy used too (which is how I got it).

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and enjoyable!, October 24, 2003

I think the book is beautifully done and captures the essence of why so many people love golf and connect with the game! The authors did a wonderful job of sharing reasons why so many of us keep coming back for more. I think the reasons contained within are wonderful and well-balanced, and have already given the book to many other golfing friends -- beginners and low handicappers -- who agree. The photographs are stunning and very well done; we love displaying it on our coffee table. Thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great Gift!, October 24, 2003

I am often searching for gifts for those men in my life who don't seem to want for anything I could buy. But there I was in Barnes & Noble where this great new golf book was being featured. Although not a golfer myself, I thought the design and photograph's were terrific. I immediately bought one for my brother-in law and another for a friend, both who are avid golfer's and happen to share the same birthday. It is the first time I have given them a gift where their eye's lit up. They loved 1001 Reasons for Golf. I definately scored a hole in one by giving this book as a gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars In a class by itself, October 26, 2003

If you love golf, then you will love this book! I recieved this book as a gift from my non-golfing wife on my birthday. She always gives me something golf related because she knows how much I love the game but the majority of these gifts eventually end up unused in the garage, (the golf ball monogrammer, the tee caddy, the portable golf ball cleaner etc.) or unread at the bottom of a stack of books. While I thanked her for "1001 Reasons to Love Golf" inwardly I thought oh great, another golf book I'll never read! When will she ever stop buying me golf related crap? Then I cracked it open and found it was unlike any other golf book I had ever picked up.
The table of contents has headings like "The Promise of Improvement", "The Joy of Playing", and "The Lure of Golf"...clearly, not just another book about golf. Of course, it is wonderfully designed with superb photographs and a real pleasure just to thumb through. But what I liked best about it was that it unlocked a torrent of dormant golfing memories- from my first golf outing as a child, to the first time I was under par for 18 holes and everything in between. This book reminds me, in a very personal way, why I really love the game of golf. It's inspiring and I'm buying copies for my regular foursome to give them for Christmas.

So there I was, sitting in my local Barnes & Noble, skimming through what appeared to be a great new coffee table golf book, giving both the casual and die-hard golfer 1001 reasons to love the sport, complete with great photos from around the world. Some sample reasons: "To play golf with my dad," with photo of father & son; "To play the Old Course, St. Andrews" with a nice photo. Problem was when the authors got to naming the great golfers of history. It was only then that they revealed themselves to be amateurs, not professionals. Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, and Sam Snead were all aptly named as "Legends of Golf." Problem is, so was Ben Crenshaw, Greg Norman and Payne Stewart. These three are legends of the game?? Why not John Daly too, then? Only a casual golf fan would make such a bad inclusion. Then they name numerous "Champions of Golf" including everyone from Bernhard Langer to Hale Irwin to Nick Price. Included is Sergio Garcia !! Sergio Garcia is champion of what exactly ?! Again, an amateur mistake. Obviously missing from both the Legends section AND the Champions section is Seve Ballesteros and Raymond Floyd. They are never mentioned. I can always tell a true golf fan from a casual follower of the sport by my Seve vs. Sergio test. A true golf fan knows that Severiano Ballesteros was one of the game's legends, and Sergio Garcia is, to date, an unproven tour player with a few minor wins. A casual follower of the sport thinks that Sergio Garcia is already a champion, and has probably never heard of Seve Ballesteros. And an amateur and casual follower of the game has no business writing a book about it.
