Book Description

August 1999 0810836009 978-0810836006
The second volume of 1/2/3/4 For the Show, is an invaluable guide to the important, though sometimes overlooked, small-cast, one-act plays. Response to the first volume, released in 1995, indicated the need for a second. In this follow-up, Lewis Heniford describes more than 2,200 plays. For each play, Heniford provides astonishingly rich detail, including synopses, quotations from other sources, publishers, themes, quotes from reviewers, even ISBN numbers for easy identification of available versions. Heniford has anticipated his audience's needs, and provides the proper tools to best assist them—users can reference the plays through the Author Index, the Cast Size/Gender Index, or the Title Index. This work and its accompanying volume will be a significant addition to all educational and public libraries. It will be an indispensable resource for directors, teachers (high school and college), actors, and all one-act fans.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Following a successful first volume published in 1995, HenifordAa drama teacher and librarianAhas compiled a second volume that serves as a guide to 2200 one-act plays with fewer than five cast members. The new volume has been expanded by 25 percent. Improvements over the first volume include a synopsis of each play in the author index or main entry section. Additional information about each playAincluding genre, theme, cast size, availability of scripts (sometimes with an Internet address), and often reviews or comments from other sourcesAis included in the main entry section. There is also a cast/gender and title index. A number of the playwrights listed may be better known for full-length plays or other works (e.g., A.R. Gurney, Wendy Wasserstein, Moss Hart, Barry Schisgal, O. Henry). Heniford, who has made small-cast one-act plays his life's work, also offers a web site (www2.scescape.com/heniford) that contains some of the same material included here. This volume will be of use in libraries whose clientele have an interest in producing one-act plays and wherever the web site is not sufficient.AChristine E. Bulson, SUNY at Oneonta Lib.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gold mine of small-cast one-act plays for production, January 24, 2000

This review is from: 1/2/3/4 For the Show (Hardcover)
This book is a gold mine for those seeking out small-cast one-act plays for production! Dr. Heniford's newest resource, not only lists the titles thousands of available plays by playwrights both new and established, it provides synopses, thematic elements, and running times, and cross-references the plays by title and cast specifications. Contact information also is given for each show. This volume is a must for the bookshelf of every producer, director, theatre company, and college/university theatre department committed to producing one-act plays. (Reviewed by Angelo Parra, award-winning writer and dramatist, who also writes and edits personal histories and family memoirs.)
