3.0 out of 5 stars This book has its good points, but it's not the best, July 22, 2000

I really like the concept of this book. Each page has the numeral, the spelled-out number, dots equal to the number, and a photograph illustrating the number. Four different ways to illustrate a number on each page.

The problem is that it is not all that interesting.

Some of the photographs are a bit fuzzy, as though they are extreme enlargements from an original photo. And it is just hard to get excited about nine beads on a string, even though the photo is crisp and clear.

My son doesn't dislike this book, but if I pick it out to be read he only wants me to go through it once.

Another counting book that he seems to like a bit better is "Miss Spider's Tea Party : The Counting Book" by David Kirk and Antoinette White (Editor). It is different from Tana Hoban's book in that it is a story that also happens to illustrate counting, but my son wants to hear that one over and over.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy as 1, 2, 3 ..., November 7, 1998

Simle as they come, this counting book for toddlers is full of vibrant images that also challenge the senses -- 4 luscious slices of oranges, 2 bright red tennis shoes, 6 brown eggs in a carton, 7 yummy animal crackers ...

This book is as simple as they come. But coming from the parent of a curious 2-year-old, I can tell you that the simplicity is what makes this book so cherished.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! A little more than gently worn, but worth it. The book is great for young toddlers. My grandson is just a year old, May 12, 2009
This review is from: 1, 2, 3 Board Book (Board book)
I purchased the book for my grandson who is just a little over a year old. He loves books, but still needs something that he won't tear. The board books serve well. The bright colors and simplistic photographic images keep his interest and teach basic concepts like colors, shapes and counting configurations. One example is her body part images - feet, i.e. toes are shown for counting to ten. He giggled at the photo that reminded him of his little (Flintstone) feet. He likes to "read" himself. He turns the pages and seemingly studies each one of them independently.
Tana Hoban is an author whose work I remember from when my daughter and son were little children some thirty years ago. I sought out her books, because I remember what excellent teaching tools they were, and what a delight they were for them. We have to 'supervise' the other Tana Hoban books, because they are the usual thickness paper pages.
