Book Description

April 10, 1995
Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from the twentieth century to the first century. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. In other words, they focus on the original meaning of the passage but don't discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuable -- but the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps us with both halves of the interpretive task. This new and unique series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into modern context. It explains not only what the Bible means but also how it can speak powerfully today.

5.0 out of 5 stars A balanced look at original meaning and modern application, August 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 1 Corinthians (The NIV Application Commentary) (Hardcover)
Dr. Blomberg does an excellent job of combining scholarly but accessible exegesis of the text of 1 Corinthians with an extremely balanced examination of modern applications. The troubles of the Corinthian church remain germane for the 20th and 21st century church. In spite of the nearly two thousand year of "progress," problems such as willful and baseless divisiveness, sexual immorality, propriety of conduct during worship services, and the role of women in the church exist in one extreme or the other in almost every modern denomination. Every Christian can benefit from a modern look at the overarching importance of love in the life and ministry of believers. Dr. Blomberg's fair application across the doctrinal spectrum, his willingness to bridge between the original context and the modern to confront divisive traditions and practices head on, and his focus on the importance of the fundamental unity of all Christians make this a very valuable and very readable look at Paul's inspired solutions to the problems of both a first century church and modern churches.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best commentary, July 2, 2010
By
This review is from: 1 Corinthians (The NIV Application Commentary) (Hardcover)
After teaching through most of 1 Corinthians now, I have to say that I am disappointed by this commentary. While I have other examples of the NIV Application Commentary series (such as K. Lawson Younger's excellent work on Judges/Ruth), Dr. Blomberg's volume is simply not very good. In many cases, there seems to have been a lack of effort put into the "Original Meaning" sections, resulting in thin discussions and a lack of detail. The "Bridging Contexts" sections are somewhat better, but things fall flat again in the "Contemporary Significance" sections, as Blomberg sometimes pushes what are evidently his own somewhat liberal points of view that lack scriptural basis in certain areas. Of the four commentaries that I read before teaching regarding this epistle, this is my least favorite.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Resurce!!, March 23, 2010
This review is from: 1 Corinthians (The NIV Application Commentary) (Hardcover)
This is an excellent resouce for anyone looking to did deeper into Paul's letter to the Corinthian church. It provides clear perspective and bridges the gap from the New Testament and provide a practical applicaiton of how the principles should be lived out on a daily basis as a believer in Christ.
