Lovely & Lyrical~,
By Susan Kingsley "ecse_teacher5204" (Providence, RI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 1 Is One (Hardcover)
1 is One is classic Tasha Tudor. The illustrations are of days gone by ~ bonneted girls and a boy writing on a slate; simple, natural settings with some of a whimsical nature (I especially enjoyed the "12 baby birds learning how to sing"). In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, the text teaches the numbers 1 through 20 in a rhythmical way. A joy for adult and child alike!

Five is Five Stars,
This review is from: 1 Is One (Hardcover)
Tasha Tudor's 1 is One teaches children numbers with a lyrical, poem-like text. The illustrations look like they would be perfect for a spring calendar. I would recommend this book to anyone whos children are bored with the semi- mediocre picture books out today.
1 is one duckling swimming in a dish 2 is two sisters making a wish 3 is three swallows up in the sky 4 is four sheep nibbling rye 5 is five eggs in a pretty round nest 6 is six children all dressed in their best 7 is seven apples on a little apple tree 8 is eight daffodills you are picking for me The book goes on the the number twenty. This is one for the picture book lover in all of us.

1 is One,
This review is from: 1 Is One (Hardcover)
A classically illustrated Caldecott Honor Book counts to twenty in rhyming short sentences. The author notes, "There will...always be children who must learn to count. Teach them also to enjoy the process and to count those things that are important to them," and she does.

As ever, when it came time to give a gift book to a new mother --this one came to the forefront of my mind. In gentle watercolors illustrating not only beautiful children, but plants, flowers, small pets-Tasha yet again leads the child, to hear and see the first set of numbers to learn. The ever-beautiful pictures stay in the mind's eye and help imprint the numbers of all the favorite items as we count up to ten.

This book was great. I read it to my cousin's children ages 6-8. The illustrations are beautiful. The children liked looking at the pictures which are very detailed and there is something new to find each time you look. I loved that not only does the book show the number (1,2,3) but it is also in text (one, two, three). We also referred to the pictures for a visual aid on what a group of that number would look like. Not only will children learn the numbers in the numeral and text for up to the number twenty, but they will also extend their vocabulary.

I bought this for my son's first birthday even though we've still got a couple of months to go ;) It is a darling counting book, with classic vintage Tasha Tudor illustrations that you will appreciate. Very sweet little children on each page. Well written. I highly recommend it!

This is a sweet and charmingly illustated Caldecott winning children's book. It was a gift for 2 different granddaughters and it's very "girly" with its pastel illustrations.
As a counting book for a toddler, it's particularly fun because it goes to twenty (20).

This review is from: 1 is One (Board book)
Love the board books for youngest readers becasue they don't crumple the pages and accidentally tear them, fingerprints wipe off well too. Tasha has never made a mistake yet with her exquisite renderings. There is nothing simplistic or "boring" about them ( as I have read in a very few of her reviewers)....they are filled with the beauty and innoncence of being alive and in harmony with nature and sharing in the love of family. Slow down folks, don't let the gift of life be robed from you by the bombardment and even horror of the extreme sensual impact of the media world....especially, don't let this happen to your children...guard their hearts and your own.

I was expecting something different, perhaps a little more imagination. The illustrations are lovely and the rhymes are nice. Some of the subjects of counting aren't part of the modern family and can be explained. Overall, it is one of the best counting books I have seen.

This book was a Christmas gift for my grandson who is 2.5 years old. He loved it. The adorable illustrations and rhymes make it appealing for the adults who have to read it over and over and over again. I highly recommend this book and any others that Tasha Tudor has written or illustrated.
