The "1 Page Strategy Sheet" is the synthesis of leading thought on strategic planning originating from Michael Porter's seminal works on the subject.

It's intended to take strategic planning out of the dust covered three ring binders bring it to practical applicability for executives facing the real no-nonsense day-to-day challenges of running a real business.

My initial source of inspiration came from this ringing quote from the ancient Chinese Book of Army Management (as relevant today as it was 15 centuries ago) "On the field of battle, the spoken word does not carry far enough, hence the institution of gongs and drums. Nor can ordinary objects be seen clearly enough, hence the institution of banners and flags. Gongs and drums, banners and flags, are the means whereby the ears and eyes of the host may be focused on one particular point. The host thus forming a single united body."

I was also inspired by research on Grand Master chess players select and alter their tactics and strategy in response their opponents.

I believe the "1 Page Strategy Sheet" is the best and most cogent application of modern strategic planning - at least for busy real- life executives who need immediate action and results.

I was expecting a solid approach to defining and implementing a strategy. What I got was a lightweight, generalized overview with no structured methodology or good case studies. The final one page strategy was no more than you would expect to see on any corporate office reception wall. Disappointing.
