3.0 out of 5 stars Important things you should consider first, May 10, 2005
This review is from: 1-Year Replacement Plan for Electronics Products (Electronics)
Service plans are usually an impulse buy with high profit margins due to the very few claims they get. For most people, these plans are an often unnecessary expenditure.

First off, before you buy a service plan, make sure you look at the terms of your credit card. Many cards offer 1 or more years of additional warranty coverage just for using their card. Often, these go into affect after the manufacturer's warranty ends.

Taking a product with a standard 1 year warranty, you would have 2 years of total coverage if you purchased it using a credit card giving you an additional 1 year warranty, making a 2 year service plan completely unnecessary.

Even without cc coverage, be sure to read the terms of this service plan first and decide if you'd ever use it. Note that the service plan starts at the date of purchase, so it will overlap your manufacturer's warranty. Unless the manufacturer is shady or might go under soon, you don't need additional coverage during that time.

One other thing you should think about is that if you return this item, it will be very difficult if not impossible to get a refund on the service plan. You do have 30 days to purchase the service plan, so consider waiting until you're sure you want to keep the product before buying the plan.

If you do purchase this plan, make sure you store the information somewhere safe so that if you ever do have a problem, you will be able to find what you need to get it taken care of.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just a correction,..., November 25, 2005
This review is from: 1-Year Replacement Plan for Electronics Products (Electronics)
Just a correction to a review prior to mine. It stated:

"You do have 30 days to purchase the service plan, so consider waiting until you're sure you want to keep the product before buying the plan. "

Based on a phone call to their 1-800 number they will not honor the plan if you buy the service plan after you purchase the item. In other words, you must purchase the item and the service plan at the same time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Other reviewers need to read more closely, July 8, 2005
This review is from: 1-Year Replacement Plan for Electronics Products (Electronics)
I haven't yet purchased this, but the other reviewers' comments are deceiving. Yes, they are correct that if you purchase a service plan it begins at the time of purchase of the item. However, what you are purchasing is a REPLACEMENT PLAN, and it clearly states that "If You Purchased A Replacement Plan: Coverage commences upon the expiration of manufacturer's labor warranty and extends for the period indicated on your sales receipt." Whether something like this is valuable to you or not I can't say, but the general description is not trying to mislead you as others would have you believe.

2.0 out of 5 stars Coverage is clear -just read closely, September 1, 2005

For those who are expressing confusion about the coverage, this plan is a REPLACEMENT plan, not a SERVICE plan. For replacement plans, the coverage reads: "If You Purchased A Replacement Plan: Coverage commences upon the expiration of manufacturer's labor warranty and extends for the period indicated on your sales receipt." So it is as advertised. I agree with the comments about the utility of extended warranties, but I think I will go ahead and purchase the plan since the portable dvd players that are in my price range all seem to have considerable inconsistencies in reliability.

2.0 out of 5 stars VENDOR should be researched and terms should be made clear, November 28, 2005

Generally speaking, we like plans when they are reliable, good, and priced right -- the trouble is, 1) based on the reviews of Amazon loyalists, this plan doesn't pass any of those tests, and 2) if it sounds too good to be true, stay away from it.
Apple's plan price is ridiculous, perhaps even for Apple. I'd sooner just count on browbeating the company to give me a $26 dollar credit on a new iPod than pay $52 for their plan.
This vendor's plan, however, is more than questionable. Whenever you have questions or doubts about the terms of something before you buy it, DON'T buy it -- demand that the vendor make his intentions clear, in writing. The reviews I've seen on Amazon, taken together, show that the terms are NOT clear, and that different buyers have had vastly different experiences -- that's undesireable.
The vendor claims to cover "normal wear and tear", which sounds exactly like what Circuit City and Best Buy employees will tell you about their company plans, which is NOT TRUE. The employees are merely telling you what they've been told to say, but what they probably don't know is that the reality is extremely different than their promises. For a third the cost of the manufacturer's plan, which doesn't cover wear and tear, nor even if you believe some of the reviewers, maybe not the battery, this vendor claims to cover normal wear and tear. At best, Apple would most sensibly send you a new product, but this vendor promises to send you a check for your full purchase price! No mention even of normal depreciation.
Let's all wait a week or so and trust Amazon to investigate this vendor and see what's what. The great thing about Amazon is that they have the financial power to be choosy about which vendors they allow on this website. I trust Amazon enough that if this vendor is still here ten days from my posting I'll buy from them.
AMAZON RULES BABY!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 1-Year Replacement Plan for Electronics Products (Electronics)
I purchased this plan from Amazon because of the new technology product. Was supposed to replace the product if any defects occur. Product broke, have now called twice to get the plan enforced, but company who sold it says it won't cover the product because Amazon made me pay too much for the plan! I paid $19.99 because I was supposed to per Amazon but NEW says I paid too much and I'll have to go back to amazon to get a credit before they can fix my product. I don't get it, and I'm never going to purchase this type of plan again.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Total Rip-Off, October 17, 2006

I purchased this plan for a small applience I bought through Amazon. When the applience failed, I called them and they refused to do anything because the manufactuer's warrenty had not expired. They also told me that even if I waited until the manufactuer's warrenty expired, they would still not honor my claim because it was then a "pre-existing" problem. This is a total rip-off, don't buy it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading Product Description, December 15, 2005

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: 1-Year Replacement Plan for Electronics Products (Electronics)
I just called the 800 number given in the product description and specifically asked if the replacement plan covered only
"normal wear and tear" or if, for example, I dropped my IPOD, would it still be covered. The answer from the agent was that no, dropping it would not be covered and the plan only covers normal wear and tear. Bad plan - bad customer relations.
