Book Description

October 9, 2001
Authoritative and browsable, comprehensive and fun, 10,000 Answers is both a portal to the world of little-known facts and an absorbing destination itself. This book stands in the tradition of Fred Worth's Trivia Encyclopedia, a cult classic that unfortunately was never updated and had no index. Perfect for trivia buffs who've had to wait too long for a new book like this, 10,000 Answers is also entertaining and accessible for any lover of odd, interesting, engaging facts -- and of course, "Millionaire" watchers.

Features Include:

• Foreword by Will Shortz, The New York Times puzzle editor
• Unlike other trivia books, it's organized by answer
• A full category index helps you find subjects quickly
• Truly encyclopedic -- over 10,000 entries on a wide range of subjects
• Hundreds of lists (the original 31 Flavors of Baskin-Robbins ice cream; Henry VIII's six wives)

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for pop culture, but has some errors, August 26, 2002
By
This review is from: 10,000 Answers: The Ultimate Trivia Encyclopedia (Paperback)
I bought this to study for a Jeopardy try out. While it is very heavy on events and people from the last 100-150 years, it does lack in more historical trivia. Definitely a nice book, but not a definitive resource for all around trivia.

One thing I was very concerned about was the errors that I found. One listed one of the ships that took settlers to Jamestown as the Sarah Constant, while the vast majority of records call it the Susan Constant. Also, the book claims that the "Where's the Beef!" slogan was used by Burger King, while it was actually used by Wendy's. Granted, that's just two out of the reported 10,000, but those two I found in a quick skimming of the book, and are just ones I know of. So it doesn't exactly instill confidence in the accuracy of the other answers that I don't know.

Contained among these pages are literally thousands of trivia facts. What is most outstanding about the book is the layout. The index is well organized and subjects are very easy to find. I found all of the trivia contained here extremely interesting, and believe me there is a lot of reading material.

Some trivia books contain a ton of information but the subject matter is often so strange and bizarre that few people have an interest in the material anyway. That is not the case with "10,000 Answers." The material presented here is educational, useful, factual and intriguing. Some readers may read it from cover to cover, others may read the material according to subject matter. Either way, it is a terrific addition to your library and excellent resource material.

5.0 out of 5 stars An incomparable trivia reference, October 16, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: 10,000 Answers: The Ultimate Trivia Encyclopedia (Paperback)
I own dozens of trivia books, and "10,000 Answers" is by far the best. Partly because of its superb index, which too many trivia books lack (so you can't find a trivia question's answer unless you already know the answer!). Partly because of its readability -- lots of disparate facts on every page, and little of the "who cares?" trivia that just pads out so many trivia books. But mainly, for me, the fact that it includes so many wonderful lists in one place, the sorts of things that are never collected in one book and are often hard to find at all ... things like the people on the "Sgt. Pepper" album cover, and all of the Jelly Belly jelly bean flavors, and every college team nickname. To me, this book is a must-have.
