Ready to chop?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Zyliss Chopper with Cup (Kitchen)
Chopping is a breeze with the Zyliss chopper with cup. I was happy with the product until it came time to clean the chopper. It is pretty difficult to clean. I admit it was kinda scary trying to clean up inside the sharp blades. But over all this chopper was not going back to the store. The time you save is worth it, not to mention my burning eyes when I'm chopping onions is gone. This thing chops everything from nuts to ice to potatoes. But then I just found the other day the new improved "Zyliss COMFORT food chopper." It's a big improvement to this one. Clean up is a cinch now that the sides open to give you full access to the blades and it even comes with a sturdy bendable chopping mat. I know there are a few other imitation choppers out there but now I'm completly satisfied that I own the best of the choppers. The only reason I gave the Zyliss chopper with cup a 3 was because the improved version is just so much better.

More Work than it is Worth,

I was so excited to buy this product and prevent my eyes from tearing when chopping onions. However, I found the product not to be that useful. The width often does not fit my onions, the blades are not that sharp to cut through the layers of onions (don't even bother to try it on basil), and it is sooooo hard to clean. How do you get bits of onion off the blades that are sharp and retract into the base of the Zyliss? I recommend a knife or a mini-cuisinart instead.

You know those commercials for the chopping gadget? Bang, bang, bang and you have mouth-watering something-or-other, right? Well I don't know how well those work, and given the price I'm inclined to think they barely do, but I can tell you that the Zyliss is kind of a disappointment. The unit comes with the chopper, which is a zig-zag blade and a plunger handle with a spring. Press down and the blade goes down, let go and it retracts into the plastic barrel. A plastic cap fits over the blades so that when you chop, the plastic pushes bits of food off the blades as they retract. Pretty clever huh? The chopping is done in a little cup. And I mean little! It holds maybe half a cup of food. That's okay, I didn't figure to use this for big jobs, so I wasn't really worried about it. Chopped onion, tomato, olives, etc. for things like tacos were what I had in mind. Unfortunately the Zyliss has blades that just aren't very sharp. It will chop tomatoes, or rather, turn them into tomato salsa, and it chops olives pretty well, but herbs just get mashed down into the bottom of the cup. Most jobs require opening the unit, fluffing the food and then chopping again. You get better chopping action when you remove the plastic blade guard, but then food migrates up into the body of the chopper and scraping it out should NOT be done with your fingers. A chopstick is good for this job. On the whole, I'm kind of neutral about this item. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it but I wouldn't not recommend it either if you have jobs that require just a bit of chopping (or smushing) It's convenient and it does do the job. Just not as cleanly and quickly as I'd hoped.

This was my favorite kitchen gadget when I got it. I used it almost every day. It is terrific for chopping small quantities of things like onions, garlic, carrots, and celery. It doesn't work so well for soft or leafy things (like herbs). It's a little tricky to clean, but I found it more than worth the effort. Unfortunately, it broke after about a year and a half. I tried another brand which mashed (rather than chopped) and broke within 3 months.Despite its fairly short life-span, I will probably buy another one. I found my first useful enough that it's worth replacing (even if I end up having to replace it every few years).

Solid, useful, a well-designed and sturdy product. Mine replaces a less attractive and distinctly shoddier version of the same purchased (shamefully) at one of those Pampered Chef parties. The only improvement I'd make in it is a body that opens to expose the blades for rinsing - my older device was easier to clean up after in that respect. I suspect this one will have sliced, diced, minced, and chopped many more vegetables than its predecessor before it's consigned to my garbage can!

A necessity for any kitchen,

I saw this at a friend's place and thought it was the most ingenious thing! I bought it the very next day (from amazon's website) for my mother, who I know loves this kind of stuff. Its compact, easy to clean, and definitely a major time saver!

Great for small amounts,

There are just two of us and I only chop small amounts for cooking. This chopper is very easy to use (even with slightly arthritic fingers) and with the sealable lid, you can do things ahead of time and refrigerate until needed. Very easy to clean.

I loved this chopper for about the first year I had it. The clear plastic wring broke so I will try another brand now.

Great product! If you like cooking but don't like onions because they make you cry, this is the item to make you happy. Chops pretty much everything. Easy to use, easy to clean, easy to assemble and even has a small container to keep what you don't use, for next time. The only thing you have to remember is to wash it right away because it is easier to get off the stuff from blades when are fresh.

Are you sure this is a quality product?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Zyliss Chopper with Cup (Kitchen)
The one I had was basically the same as this one. We had the plastic blade guard replaced because it would crack horizontally and the tabs that lock it into place would brake off. I found it hard to clean between the blades. Also the blades bent. I have seen a different model where the center opens to make cleaning easier. I would suggest that model over this one. It definitely did not live up to the Zylis reputation.
