5.0 out of 5 stars Exceeded expectations
I very highly recommend this netbook. It is replacing my old VAIO T-series. I had considered getting a new VAIO, but with the huge price difference, it was worth trying out this one.

I had expected it to reflect its $700 price tag by feeling and looking cheap. I was completely wrong, and the beauty of this machine is stunning. It's so skinny, and so light,...

3.0 out of 5 stars May be worth the money, you decide
There are a LOT of netbooks out there, and they are all very similar. This one is a bit of an exception, in that it is thinner and is trimmed out better. However, it will have virtually identical performance to the others, and is a LOT more expensive.

This review is from: ASUS Eee PC S101 10.2-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel Atom Processor, 1 GB RAM, 16 GB Solid State Drive, 30 GB Eee Storage, XP Home) UV Painting Graphite (Personal Computers)

It's so skinny, and so light, and the graphite cover is perfect! The white lights that show status above the keyboard shine gorgeous. The power brick is tiny, i can hardly believe it!

XP Home works great, and only takes up some 4gb of space. There is not an overload of bloatware as you get with SONY. The battery life, even with just 4-cell, is also great! 5.5 hours with the screen darkness all the way down, and a little over 4 hours with the screen on max brightness. The computer boots and runs quickly. The power management (super hybrid engine) is also great, with its own dedicated button.

I couldn't be more satisfied with this computer. The right shift key is small, and positioned poorly, but i quickly became accustomed to it. In conclusion, this netbook is GORGEOUS, it's solidly built, and it exceeded all of my expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Great with Windows7, July 5, 2009

As soon as I go this home I decided to upgrade. My concept was a ultra portable laptop replacement. The 16GB SSD drive was useless so I researched and upgraded to a RUNCORE 64GB SSD. I also upgraded to 2GB RAM. I then installed Windows7 Build 7100 (later updating to Build 7264). I have been very happy with the performance so far. It has its moments, but then what can you expect from a RC OS on a system originally released for Windows XP.

But everything works. My stereo bluetooth headset works great for listening to movies and chatting with my wife on Skype. The wifi connects to all access points effortlessly.

The package is attractive and easy to carry around in the leather case provided by ASUS. Battery life is so so, but I'm not complaining as size was the major reason for purchase. The wide screen is very clear but since its max native resolution is 1024x600 I find some applications are below the screen requiring 1024x768. Still not a biggie. My biggest negative point is that ASUS choose to put the up arrow key where the full sized right Shift key should be so its been a chore getting used to not having the right Shift key where I expect to find it.

All in all the ASUS eeePC S101 is a great netbook especially when combined with Windows next OS.

5.0 out of 5 stars A highly recommended buy, March 19, 2009

My target for netbook is a reasonably fast machine that is easy to carry and type on. I've tried out ASUS EeePC S101 against HP, Samsung, Fujitsu models of similar prices, and was totally amazed by the speed of the S101 on machine startup, document processing, web browsing.

Pros:
--> fast
--> light (only 1kg battery included)
--> very nice finish (I have the graphite one, it's like a car's finish)

Limitations:
--> storage 16G + 16G memory card
--> battery lasts for about 3 hours because larger batteries will make the machine heavier

As a mobile user, I put light weight as my highest priority. I highly recommend ASUS S101 to mobile users.

Most of the attributes the other reviewer attributes to this model are also true of any netbook, and many of them sell for under $400. If you are willing to pay for appearance and the thin and light design, then this may be the model for you. Otherwise, you might want to check out:

The Acer Aspire One (smaller, much cheaper)
The Samsung NC10 (another 10.1", with a better keyboard and much better battery life)
The HP Mini 1000
The Dell Inspiron Mini 9
The Lenovo S10

or any of the other miriad 9/10" netbooks out there...
