Marcs musical roots stretch back to 1972 in Madison, Wisconsin, when, as a teen, he formed his first band, Flash 750.5. Along with his best friend, Steve Ranger, Marc wrote several really cheesy teen songs, culminating in a backyard concert featuring Marc on guitar and Steve on drum. (Yes, one drum.) They made $5.00 and bought a pick, drumsticks for Steve, and a Lennon/McCartney songbook.
Fast forward to the early 1990s. Marcs songwriting matured considerably, tackling themes of love won, love lost, disdain for high school, parental angst, and other fun subjects, with a Velvets-meets-Stones-meets George Jones aesthetic. Having moved back to St. Louis, Marc honed his songwriting and live performances through open mics and songwriting circles. It began paying off. In the mid-90s, Marcs numerous live appearances resulted in favorable critical attention. He began a four-year winning streak in the Blueberry Hill Records Songwriters Contest, capturing top spots in the Alternative, Roots, Country and Pop categories. Along the way, he also picked up recognition in the Best Songwriter, Best Folk Artist, and Best Roots Artist categories, in the coveted St. Louis Riverfront Times Music Poll.
Though he was focusing primarily on his solo material, Marc found the time to lend his songwriting and guitar skills to The Relatives, a hard-edged St. Louis Pop band. The bands eponymous debut CD received a surprising amount of critical praise for its songwriting depth and sound. The bands Replacements-like live performances were the "Mr. Hyde" to Marcs more "Dr. Jekyll" solo shows.
With Relatives co-guitarist/co-songwriter, Mark Ray, Marc helped form a new band, Waterloo. Waterloos musical approach was vastly different and more musically challenging, owing more to GBV, the Silos, Red House Painters, and Oasis than the former bands Midwestern roots. That said, though, Waterloo still rocked. Though more subdued onstage, Waterloos thoughtful songwriting and performances were thick, panoramic sound explorations. The bands debut CD, "Going To The Sun" (Undertow), is a beautifully-crafted, lush soundscape of Mark Rays evocative lyrics, complemented by Marcs .
Still, Marc has continued a dual path with his solo material, which has culminated in the release of "10 & 2"(Undertow). Featuring members of Nadine and Waterloo, "10 & 2" is a powerful, chugging rock record albeit quite different than many had expected from Marc. Still, the songwriting shines. "10 & 2" contains some of Marcs most vivid stories, hardly softened by his first foray into fatherhood.
Marc will likely being playing a handful of European dates with Waterloo in Fall of 2001, then resume solo performances in early 2002.

I never realized I had feet and a general sense of rhythm before discovering Marc Cheswick. Now I can drive and talk on my cell phone at the same time. Seriously good writing if you're into meaningful, well crafted tunes and stuff like that. Try it. You'll like it. I would have signed him to my record label, but he refuses to work for pork rinds and Mountain Dew. -George Blowfish, Illustrious Potentate, J.P. Wow! Records-

Hard driving at times, at other times gentle. This is a very good CD and a worthwhile purchase if you are the kind of person who likes to know things others don't. No one has ever heard of it, but every time I play it for some one they want it!
