5.0 out of 5 stars Styx Fans LOVE THIS CD!
I have been a Styx fan since 1974, and I don't appreciate someone speaking rubbish and claiming it to be the general feeling of Styx fans. Most of us true Styx fans have matured over the years. As my tastes have matured, so have Dennis DeYoung's artistic endeavors. It's ironic that most singers' voices get weaker as they get older and Dennis DeYoung's voice has...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Suprise from the Styx man
I remember getting this as a review copy when it first came out and being thoroughly prepared to hate it. But after I gave it a couple of listens, I found myself rather enjoying it. Unlike most rock star vanity projects where the "Standards Album" is a last gasp at shoring up a staggering career, or an overinflated raft of pomposity, "10 On Broadway" was neither. There...

I have been a Styx fan since 1974, and I don't appreciate someone speaking rubbish and claiming it to be the general feeling of Styx fans. Most of us true Styx fans have matured over the years. As my tastes have matured, so have Dennis DeYoung's artistic endeavors. It's ironic that most singers' voices get weaker as they get older and Dennis DeYoung's voice has actually gotten better. He has the most pristine tenor voice in pretty much any genre! This CD is wonderfully arranged and produced for optimum effect. DeYoung continues to stretch his talent into all different genres of music and does them all beautifully! Pilate's Dream from Jesus Christ Superstar, which is a song that he sang as a member of the cast, is on this CD. In February, I attended a sold out DeYoung concert that was packed to the rafters with Styx fans. It was Dennis with a 50 piece orchastra, Styx music, a couple of his better known solo efforts like Desert Moon, a couple of broadway tunes, AND music from a musical that DeYoung wrote {The Hunchback of Notre Dame (non-Disney version)}; the thousands of Styx fans in attendance were blown away by the enormity of this man's talent! I traveled from D.C. to Chicago for this concert and it was sooo worth it! May 12th, I will be there again as DeYoung kicks of his national tour and tapes his PBS special, but in the mean time, I will pacify myself by listening to this CD, Styx CD's, The Ultimate Collection, Hunchback, and periodicly reliving that incredible concert by viewing video clips of February's concert on DeYoung's official web site. As to the previous reviewer's insights about the innovative Tommy "Girls with Guns" Shaw, I need not waste my time on pronouncing what a lot of Styx fans think of his recent innovations because the empty seats at the recent Styx concerts, speak volumes! Amazon has a real winner here and at a great price! Buy it! You WILL love it! Sincerely, A true Styx fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW, February 21, 2002
This review is from: 10 On Broadway (Audio CD)
I have always been a STYX and DEYOUNG fan, but I was not prepared for this cd. Showtunes, come on, that was my reaction when I heard that was what his new cd was about. But after hearing it, I was amazed. Sure it not your normal music from him, or STYX, but who cares. Dennnis' voice has never sounded better. People have complained about him changing this and that about the songs. Who cares, that's what its all about, your idea on someone else's song. And what he does is fantastic. Someone to Watch Over Me, Memory, On The Street Where You Live, Bring Him Home, and It's in Every One of Us, are some of the greatest songs I've ever heard. And rest of the songs are not far behind, almost makes you forget that Dennis has forgot how to rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect 10 on Broadway, December 3, 2006

This review is from: 10 On Broadway (Audio CD)
I have known of Dennis DeYoung for a time now with his work with Styx. He never was a favorite singer of mine when it came to rock music. I bought "10 on Broadway" expecting it to be a self indulged crossover album done by a great rock singer who did a stint with "Jesus Christ Superstar" as Pilate. I put the cd on this morning and boy was I wrong. Not only did DeYoung out do himself, but it made me even think that he might be one of the best rock vocalist when it comes to technique and proper vocal emission. That never crossed my mind until I heard this album today! If you do not know who DeYoung is after listening to this album you would think for sure he was a broadway singer. This is legitimate as it comes folks. His voice on this album has a nice quality and blend especially for the more modern plays like "Jeckyl & Hyde", "Chess", "Les Mis" etc. that requires a pop edge anyway. Even the older Gershwin tunes was done in a fresh interpretation. The overdone song "Memory" even took me by surprise. His clear tenor voice is in tune, and belts out some high notes in true Broadway fashion. I have seen many modern plays on Broadway and I am telling you that DeYoung sounds better to me then some artists I have seen on stage without a doubt. The album is recorded in good taste not to mention that the acoustic production is flawless. Many of you DeYoung fans might be expecting some keyboard work from him, but he lends his hands on the accordian for only tune. To me this album shows DeYoung in his true vocal glory! This album is a perfect 10.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Triumph of an Amazing Voice, June 6, 2004

Dennis DeYoung has as unique, and wonderful, a voice as any out there. I was happy to see him branch out a bit with this nice, subdued, collection of Broadway tunes, some well-known, others more obscure.
"Once Upon a Dream" from Jekyll and Hyde is simply gorgeous. Beautiful guitar and voice only. A real masterpiece.
Two songs from a cult favorite, Chess, are standouts -- "Where I Want to Be" and "Someone Else's Story."
Dennis played Pontius Pilate in the anniversary revival of Jesus Christ Superstar and does a vocal tour de force on "Pilate's Dream" included in this collection.
I have heard the original Broadway cast version of "Bring Him Home" from Les Mis and, honestly, feel Dennis sings this one far better than the original.
The rest of the cuts are equally strong and well worth buying this CD to hear. A unique take on "On the Street Where You Live", a lovely version of "Someone to Watch Over Me."
I am no a fan of Cats, but the version of "Memory" on this CD is very nice indeed.
You won't be sorry you added this to your CD collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Suprise from the Styx man, March 20, 2004
This review is from: 10 On Broadway (Audio CD)
I remember getting this as a review copy when it first came out and being thoroughly prepared to hate it. But after I gave it a couple of listens, I found myself rather enjoying it. Unlike most rock star vanity projects where the "Standards Album" is a last gasp at shoring up a staggering career, or an overinflated raft of pomposity, "10 On Broadway" was neither. There were no amplified instruments or synthesizers used on the recording of the album, just a straightforward playing of 10 Broadway tunes. It made for a pleasing 40 minutes.

The genesis for this project comes from DeYoung's role as Pontius Pilate in a tour of "Jesus Christ Superstar." Once he became confident enough to realize he had the singing abilities to do dramatic show songs, he decided to make an entire album of them. There are a couple of real good arrangements ("On The Street Where You Live" as doo-wop) an inspired song choice from the not so well received "Time," "It's In Every One Of Us," and one total tear jerker in "Bring Him Home." On the minus side, DeYoung chose a couple songs that I don't necessarily ever need to hear again in "Summertime" and "Memory" (he only missed "Tomorrow" in the evil trio).

Overall, this 1994 CD has held up for me better than most album rockers' "covers" albums. It probably even will be around my collection longer than the recent dreadful Rod Stewart sets. By keeping things in a naturally musical setting instead of forcing the performances, Dennis DeYoung's "10 On Broadway" pays strong compliment to the Great White Way.

5.0 out of 5 stars DeYoung at his Best, January 30, 2001

For all Styx fans who think, nay... KNOW, that Dennis DeYoung has one of the most powerful and versatile voices in existance, go buy this CD and you'll still be fascinated. The man can flat out sing, enough said about his voice.

There are a few criticisms here. Some have complained about lyric changes and tempo changes in songs. As far as lyric changes, they occur in quite a few songs, Someone To Watch Over Me and Memory are two that stand out in my mind as I'm writing this. Well, considering those are probably my two favorite songs on the CD, I think that the lyric changes are pulled off just fine, most of them are just pronoun adjustments anyway (like changing the word 'he' to 'she'). As for the tempo changes, I rather like the doo-wop On The Street Where You Live. It's quite an interesting take on the song.

Anyway, buy this CD and hear a man with a clear, crisp and powerful voice.

If anything, Dennis DeYoung has shown his versatility in many forms of music. With "10 on Broadway" he shows where his musical roots come from. He can still rock with the best of them, as was shown in a recent concert Mr. DeYoung did in Chicago, IL. Too bad that some Styx fans (ie. Colorado) feel that staying in one genre is OK. Growing is spreading your wings and trying new things. Dennis certainly has done that here.

5.0 out of 5 stars He just keeps getting better, August 22, 1999

Dennis and his band TW4 played for my senior prom at St.Rita's in Chicago The crowd in '69 knew he had what it took to go fot it all - in the music sense. Go for it Dennis - four years of Augustinian priests will create a desire to get as far away from the daily discipline as possible. You made your mark and we're all proud in Chitown. Get them to release Desert Moon on CD - it's a southside Love Story. Give me another 10 from Broadway.

This CD is incredible! I've always loved the way Dennise DeYoung sings and thought this would be a good addition to my CDs. Little did I know that it would become such a favorite! I was totally blown away by all the songs but especially "On The Street Where You Live"! When I first got the CD, I listened to that song over and over and over again.

He's an extremely talented artist with such a rich and haunting voice. I enjoy this CD so much! It's been in the number one position on my player and will always remain there!

I'm hoping for "10 More on Broadway"!

You've gotta buy this one--it's a keeper!!!!

Eat your heart out Michael Crawford! This man has it all! Dennis DeYoung's voice is sensual and mesmerizing. If you are not already a fan of Broadway, you will be after listening to 10 on Broadway. Included on this CD is Pilate's Dream from Jesus Christ Superstar, DeYoung was in the cast of the revival of this musical. For Broadway fans, or DeYoung fans, this is a "must have"! For fans of STYX, this is a continuation of the theatrical excellence that you have come to expect from Dennis DeYoung. This CD will quickly become one of your favorites!!!!
