Biography

Biography by Jason Ankeny

Formed in 1973, the British hard rock outfit Bad Company was a supergroup comprised of ex-King Crimson bassist Boz Burrell, former Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs, and singer Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke, both previous members of Free. Powered by Rodgers' muscular vocals and Ralphs' blues-based guitar work, Bad Company was the first group ... Read more in Amazon's Bad Company Store

3.0 out of 5 stars 10 from 5, To Be Accurate April 30, 2003
Format:Audio CD
On first glimpse, this is a good retrospective of the Paul Rodgers years. With the hits, "Feel Like Makin' Love", "Rock and Roll Fantasy", "Can't Get Enough", and, of course, "Bad Company", this should satisfy casual Company fans not looking to spend a lot of money.
So why only three stars?
I'm glad you asked.
The problem isn't presence. The presence makes for a satisfying listen. The problem IS absence.
I mean, come on! How can you have a Bad Company hits compilation without the coolest of all bass-driven songs, "Burning Sky"? And what about "Rock Steady" and "Young Blood"? Those are at least as good as "Electric Land!"
It would be a bad business decision to put all of their worthwhile songs on one album, but ten is just too few.
Again, 10 from 6 is by no means a bad album, but it doesn't do the band justice, either. It's a worthwhile buy. Just don't make it the only one in your Bad Company collection!

4.0 out of 5 stars 5 out Of 10 Isn't Bad. October 26, 2007
Format:Audio CD
This was a fairly good 1970's group. They were not the Who or Led Zeppelin, but still far better than the Punk & Disco genres. My favorites are "Rock In Roll Fantasy, Shooting Star, Feel Like Makin Love, Ready For Love, & Can't Get enough Of Your Love." The first is an uptempo number, the second, is 70's electric rock meets acoustic. The third is a sensual rocker, while the fourth is a yearning ballad. The last is a jaunty tune to drive to. This is not a great compilation, but it is still a good one.

The only logical conclusion why "10 From 6" is such a brief compilation that it was meant to accommodate the then dominant cassette format, even though the CD era was kicking into gear by the time this package was released in 1986.

If this compilation were made to fill the actual length of a single-CD, all six classic Bad co albums could have been decently represented. It could have then become a much better "15 From 6".

Fortunately, it has been rendered obsolete by their 1999 2-CD compilation, "The Original Bad Company Anthology", which has way more offerings than "10 from 6" and rights most of the wrongs made by it as well.

"10 from 6" is technically "10 from 5". No tracks from their 1977 Album "Burnin' sky" were included. The title track from that album would have made an excellent choice for this CD. How they could ever pick "Electric Land", from their 1982 swan song (no pun intended) "Rough Diamonds" is beyond me. At least the song "Burnin' Sky" is still heard on Classic rock radio today, and it kicks much more a** too.

The only justification for owning "10 From 6" is its price point and that's it. Outside of "Electric Land" you can still hear all of these classic BadCo cuts on classic rock radio on a daily basis anyway. Why do I still give it four stars? Well the songs are still classics and BadCo's music rocks.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very brief. 3 1/2 stars. August 27, 2004
Format:Audio CD
"10 From 6" means ten songs from the original Bad Company lineup's six different studio albums (actually the ten songs on this compilation were culled from only five of them - "Burnin' Sky" isn't represented).

And that's where the problem lies. If "10 From 6" should have truly included Bad Company's ten best songs, it would have had to skip three of the group's six albums instead of just one, and draw nine of its ten songs from the first two.

But what's here is good, sure it is. The slow, swaggering blues-rocker "Feel Like Makin' Love" is here, as well as "Can't Get Enough", "Rock & Roll Fantasy", "Movin' On" and the ballad "Shooting Star". It's just a little thin, that's all.

Bad Company's first two albums, which contained 9/10 of their best material, would be much better purchase, as would "The Original Bad Co. Anthology", which also includes some rarities and four new songs.

Bad Company / 10 from 6: Warner, Swan and Atlantic records all must hate the casual fans of Bad Company. The music on this CD is great... there just isn't enough of it. There are just far too many hits missing to feel good about this CD. You may notice that there are several `hit' CDs for Bad Company and they are all criminally short or woefully inept. This one is far too short. The double CD `anthology' is utterly incompetent and unnecessarily incomplete. A proper history/hits package for Bad Company simply does not exist. This leaves you with the option of being disappointed with a hits CD or paying for every album they ever made (and as good as Bad Company was, not ALL of their albums is worth owning). I'll stick with my old LPs until those responsible for the legacy of Bad Company get off their butts and gives us a decent collection. If they don't, their incompetence will eventually lead to Bad Company being one of the many forgotten bands in history, and they deserve better than that. The 10 from 6 CD gets a Two Rating (Five for the songs that it has, and minus three for the songs that should have been added).

As a fan and collector of everything Paul Rodgers has done I had to buy this album. It's got some of the best music he's done so far on it and as such it's brilliant. However Bad Co also have a whole album that didn't get a look in on this compilation of their greatest hits. For that error alone I took off one star. If you want a brief overview of a great band then this album is for you, if you want to appreciate the band properly buy all the albums or get the new box set. A bargin box gem, but falls short of what a true fan would want.
