It's always a good thing to ask your spouse specific questions in a posture of humility and love. It's a good thing to work on building up your relationship. It's a good thing to spend time together, building into one another and learning how to make the other person feel loved.

My husband and I have always been passionate about striving to have a healthy marriage, and encouraging others to work toward that end as well. Ten years ago, we vowed to love and serve one another, with God as the head of our household, and sometimes it's a lot of work. But let me tell you, a decade down the road, every ounce of effort has been worth it. We will never look back and regret time spent to strengthen the bonds between us.

And that's why I chose to review this book. Because I'm always on the lookout for fun, creative ways to build up our relationship. So, let me tell you what I found...

When I began reading, I had a hard time connecting to the authors. Honestly? I have read other marriage books, and none of this stuff was really new to me.

It also made a big difference that my hubby and I are extremely compatible in the spiritual category of life. In fact, in our pre-marriage counseling, that's the one category where we were 100% compatible. And that makes a HUGE (let me repeat....HUUUUUUUUGE) difference in our marriage.

The authors didn't have quite the same experience and spent the beginning of the book talking about how they had trouble connecting spiritually as couples. Honestly? As much as I enjoy reading other couples' relationship anecdotes, I felt like maybe this book was a waste of time. Not because we're even close to perfect, but for once, this is an area where we're doing okay.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing September 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Ten Great Dates--written by two couples who have a lot of experience with marriage mentoring, counseling, and conferences--sets out to "help you connect faith, love, and marriage in ways that result in spiritual connection--all in the fun, guilt-free, safe format of Great Dates" (pg. 9). It was a quick read that contains some good marriage advice, and I like that it focuses on incorporating your faith into your marriage. I also liked that it included some Bible study questions to get you reading what the Bible has to say. But there were quite a few things I didn't like.

The concept is interesting--plans for 10 different Dates with your spouse--but it wasn't laid out the way I expected. Based on the back cover copy, I was expecting more ideas for the actual date activities/locations, but the focus was on what you should discuss. The most specific instructions for a date activity was were to "go to a nice restaurant" and "find a quiet place to talk."

The authors used a lot of personal stories to illustrate their points. While examples like that can be helpful, I thought there were too many stories, and they were so long it was easy to forget the point. I grew bored with them and found myself skipping those sections.

The tear-out sheets at the back of the book are designed to guide the conversation for each Date--each person is supposed to get a copy and prepare for the Date by answering the questions. I knew after reading just the first one that my husband (who is a committed Christian and usually a good sport) would never agree to do all ten Dates. By the time I finished the book, I didn't want to do them either.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ten Ways to Connect with God and Your Spouse December 4, 2013
Format:Paperback
Once again, I received a book to review for Bethany House. This time, I selected 10 Great Dates: Connecting Faith, Love, & Marriage by Peter and Heather Larson and David and Claudia Arp.

In this review program, I get to choose what I want to review, and I have been, whether I realized it or not, looking for a way for my husband and I to connect with each other and spiritually.

After a perusal and after running the idea by my husband, I am excited to report that we plan to go through the 10 Great Dates process together. In this version of the 10 Great Dates series, couples go through a ten week series of conversations including Connecting Faith and Love, Getting Into the Word, and Making Your Marriage a Lighthouse. The idea is that both partners read and reflect independently, then come back together to share and discuss.

The book is well organized and includes two tear-out copies of each of the dates.

I'm excited to get started going through this book with my husband and to have dates where we get to talk about God, our life, and our love, all rolled into one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Ministry Tool October 21, 2013
By SR
Format:Paperback
I was totally sucked into this book at the dedication page!
"This book is written to create a legacy of spiritual growth in marriages, starting with our won families, children and grandchildren. May God richly bless your lives and your marriage!"
"In the following pages will be your date coaches. No matter where you are in life, married without kids, or with a full house like the Larsons, or empty nesters like the Arps, there is something here for every couple." (Page 12) The 10 great dates are each a chapter in the book and include topics such as connecting faith and love, appreciating your differences, building your marriage on a strong foundation and making your marriage a lighthouse. Each chapter has a brief Pre-Date Preparation, Date-Night Tips, Chapter Summary, and Post-Date questions. Early in the book, the authors clearly instruct couples to extend grace throughout the process including NOT forcing a spouse to do an activity or answer a question they are unwilling to. "God does not force us to do things against our will -so let Him be your model." (Page 11) GREAT ADVICE!

At first. I was apprehensive. I suspected this was a book with serious topics which required long, involved heart-to-hearts with my spouse. In reality, it is what you make it. There are only a few key verses to read and discuss and a few questions for "jumping off points". This book is especially good for couples who are new to being a God follower and would like to figure out how to connect on a spiritual level as it feels "weird" to do things differently than "how we've always done it". It is also good for couples in a change of life situation like becoming an empty nester. I was cynical when they claimed this book was usable by couples in "every walk of life". But it really IS! Again, it is what you make it!

Great tool for those in the ministry, as well! My husband is a pastor and I appreciate tools which encourage couples to get closer spiritually!
