I was looking for a reference book with names, makers, pictures, etc. This book is very basic and appears to be aimed toward a young reader.

This book was originally published in the mid seventies; it is nice to have a reprint available. Interiewing old cowboys in the 1950's, the author gained a great deal of primary source material in regards to what types of clothing and equipment were used. A great deal of drawings appear throughout the text. This book depicts the cowboy at his most practical. A good book, though a tad expensive.

I'll keep this brief and to the point.

This book isn't a perfect history of cowboy equipment and clothing, but it IS useful. There are some factual errors (for example, depicting men of the 1880s using union suit underwear, when in fact those items came into use in the early 1900s), as well as a little Hollywood influence (some of the hats in the drawings are more akin to a western movie hat than a working cowboy's hat), but by and large this is a useful reference.

The art work is all line drawings and not a lot of those, no photos at all. But the info. is interesting a nice easy read. If your looking for casual cowboy interviews and basic info. it's a good book. If your looking for more detailed in depth gear information for leather work or drawings to identify old gear this is not the book.
But it's still a fun read.
