An intro to Zen philosophy, indeed, but no more. As a general rule, adopting any philosophy cannot be achieved without a clear and thorough understanding of what it represents, followed by true commitment to and full absorption of this philosophy. Of course, people should seek knowledge and purer living practices, and one must start somewhere in this quest. But if you are truly intent on exploring any such kinds of philosophy, I would suggest you dive deeper into more traditional writings, which don't just skim the surface. I personally do not believe in these instant-fix, practically packaged spirituality for dummies books, although this is only my opinion. I gave three stars because I cannot dismiss the content of this book and therefore must give its authors credit. I would even give it an extra star were it not for my belief that philosophy should be approached in an almost (if not fully) scholarly way. This book is just what it pretends to be - a shortcut to Zen practice - if you don't have much time or energy to devote to it or are just looking to satisfy your curiosity.

If you're looking for quick read to get into Zen/Meditating/Mindful living...this is a great place to start. This is the first book on the subject I read and if I had started reading something else I may not have continued down the path. I still go back to this book for little reminders and quotes which the author has compiled an amazing collection of. If this was JUST a book of quotes, it'd be worth the buy...but even better, the author puts these relevant quotes into whatever topic/chapter she's writing about. I think this is a great book to get started with or just to add to your collection.
