Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Scientist Kurzweil, author of The Age of Intelligent Machines ( LJ 3/11/91) and LJ 's Futurecast column, was diagnosed as having high cholesterol, early onset diabetes, and a great chance of having a heart attack. Because he had only modest improvement following the American Heart Association guidelines of 30 percent fat intake, Kurzweil began intensive research to develop a plan to improve his health. His study indicated that in societies where heart disease and cancer are virtually nonexistent, the dietary fat intake is 10 percent. By combining a diet of 10 percent fat intake with other significant lifestyle changes, he reduced his own risk of heart disease by 97 percent in fewer than two years. Dividing his book into two sections, Kurzweil first discusses his research in a question-and-answer format. In Part 2, he lays out his "10% solution" of lifestyle change, including eating (with food charts and recipes), weight control, exercise, and stress control. Appendixes include an extensive bibliography; various nutrition, body fat, and progress charts; and a glossary. Kurzweil's research is impressive, his style eminently readable, his enthusiasm contagious and his challenge to our American lifestyle and the medical community powerful. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The 20 Percent Solution for A Healthy Life, March 10, 2000
This review is from: The 10% Solution for a Healthy Life: How to Eliminate Virtually All Risk of Heart Disease and Cancer (Hardcover)
One of the best books on the subject, if not thee best. I've read Pritikin, McDougal, Depak Shopak (spelling), Ornish, even Susan Powter, and all the others during a 1 year exhaustive search of the medical facts on heart health and disease. This is the only book I continue to recommend to absolutely everyone who wants the truth about animal fat and it's relationship to whatever ails you, from heart disease to depression. I personally have not had one single day of depression since I went completely off dairy products. Kurzweil has changed my life and it's been one of the answers I had been looking for for many years. Nutrition is definitely one of the cures for all maladies. All who read this book can't help but benefit for themselves and those they love or cook for.

4.0 out of 5 stars It will change your life for the better., September 5, 1999
This review is from: The 10% Solution for a Healthy Life: How to Eliminate Virtually All Risk of Heart Disease and Cancer (Hardcover)
I picked up this book because I was ambling along 20 lbs overweight, approaching 50 and not feeling all that good about myself. What I read was completely in sync with what I always knew to be true but was presented in such a no-nonsense style that I decided to act on it. The results have been better than I hoped for. Read this book.
