5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Indie Pop, February 23, 1999
This review is from: 10 Speed (Audio CD)
Having all ways been into the Canadian indie scene, I scooped up this album when "Brand New Song" hit the airwaves. It's brilliant. The grungy guitar licks blend well with the smooth vocals and the lyrics are beautiful. If you like Sloan, The Hip, Pure or Treble Charger, you will love this album. The best track is "Brand New Song" and every other track is good. The CD-ROM videos at the beginning are also great fun, with a live performance and home videos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-hear for music snobs everywhere, December 8, 2005

This review is from: 10 Speed (Audio CD)
This is easily one of my favorite albums of all time, and in my eyes the best Mystery Machine put out. There are so many great songs here, but the true strength of the album is that it is a cohesive work from beginning to end (just remember to skip track 1 in your car when you have the volume up - it's a data track from the early days of hybrid cd's, so it will hurt your ears).

Standout tracks for me are Sinker, Phantom Tollbooth, and Brand New Song - all three are unique in their guitar work, but show off the incredible melodic instincts of the 2 guitarists and the understanding of rhythm and control from the bassist and drummer. Pound for Pound also deserves mention as the smack-yo'-mama-in-the-face opener.

Pray for a Mystery Machine reunion, kids - live, they were unparalleled. Extremely tight and dynamic, they had obvious fun at all times on stage and after particularly good shows could be counted on for some nice slamming around of instruments in a wail of feedback. This band, more than so many others, should have been famous.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Time and Place, February 26, 2002

This review is from: 10 Speed (Audio CD)
This album is great but pales in comparison to its predecessor--"Glazed." Few songs can out do the beauty of "Glazed's" "Valley Song." Both of which have fallen into obscurity. 10 Speed was a great follow up and both records mark a time and place in one's life which both symbolic and immemorial. The songs not only rock but say something of depth about the human condition which is remarkable stride beyond most of the drivel that pervades main stream America. This record confirms my suspicion that the great bands are driven into oblivion while oblivious bands are driven to a flase pedestal of greatness. Slap this disc into your player and your record collection is almost complete. Find its predecessor and add Lync's "These Are Not Fall Colors" and you have all the music you need.
