Editorial Reviews

When you hear the words "brass ensemble", you might normally either imagine a 5 piece group playing quintets by Arnold and Hindemith - or alternatively it conjures up an enormous brass band playing famous marches or show tunes. tenThing offer something rather more distinctive. They are a 10-piece all-female ensemble. They play Grieg, Piazzolla and Mozart favorites, cleverly arranged (by Jarle Storlokken), as well as original compositions for Brass Dectet by the likes of Dutch composer, Jan Koetsier. tenThing, lead by Tine Thing Helseth, was founded in the Spring of 2007 and is already highly regarded, both on a national and international level. The idea of forming a girls-only ten-piece brass ensemble was born from the fact that a very large share of the young, up-and-coming brass players in Norway at present are female. tenThing enjoys a busy tour schedule with live performances which embody the ensemble's sense of humor and genuine shared musical pleasure. Audiences invariably cannot help but become infected with the players' enthusiasm. As the group says on its own website, "tenThing desires, through a varied repertoire, to provide for great experiences of live music that the listeners will not easily forget.

A great product; hope there will be more coming along in the future.

They are capable of expressive subtlety and biting power, and have an excellent blend of sound among the various instruments and performers.

Girl groups playing popular classics seem to be a dime a dozen lately, from Bond to 12 Girls Band, but tenThing brings something new to the mix. Instead of allowing marketing teams to spice everything up with sex appeal and rock and roll elements, this group of 10 female brass players, led by trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth, simply focuses on the music. Hailing from Norway, tenThing nods toward their heritage on this CD with three short pieces by Edvard Grieg. But they venture a bit further afield in time and space, from Mozart's Rondo alla Turca, to selections from Astor Piazzola's Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. It is all beautifully played, and there's not a synthesizer or drum set to be heard.

Rather than the large ensembles familiar to American brass players, consisting of the orchestral brass of 3 or 4 trumpets, 4 horns, 3 trombones, and tuba and complemented with euphonium and percussion, tenThing's instrumentation of is a more modest size common in Europe and Japan, of three trumpets, four trombones, and one each of flugelhorn, French horn and tuba. As a trombonist myself I have heard a lot of brass playing, and I am very favorably impressed with tenThing. They are capable of expressive subtlety and biting power, and have an excellent blend of sound among the various instruments and performers. Their ensemble playing is spot on throughout--just listen to a bit of Albeniz's Asturias and you'll hear what I mean. It's a piece we usually hear on guitar, and I love the way the arrangement translates the repeated plucked notes to brass. All of the arrangements are apparently by Jarle Storlokken, who operates with a very sensitive ear and a delicate touch.

This EMI album, called "10," is the debut recording by the all-female Norwegian brass ensemble tenThing, which is led by the phenomenal trumpet player Tine Thing Helseth. I have already reviewed Helseth's four previous albums, including Storyteller, so I will just add here that Helseth is absolutely up to her already-established very high standards of playing. What is unique to this album are the other nine players, each of whom seems to play with pitch-perfect intonation and a well-rounded, polished sound. The players display a remarkable range of color and style throughout these varied works as well as impressive virtuosity. I don't know exactly how Helseth is able to lead this group while playing the trumpet but she does and the ensemble plays in perfect sync throughout this album.

The works are mostly arrangements for brass ensemble of famous works, such as the best parts of Bizet's Carmen, Albeniz's Asturias, three songs by Grieg (including March of the Dwarfs from the op. 54 Lyric Suite), two works by Piazzolla, and Mozart's famous Rondo alla Turca. These works are enjoyable in various arrangements but the versions heard here may well be the most "FUN" of them all. You'll want to listen to the Bizet Carmen suite over and over again and each time you do, it will bring a smile to your face. The virtuosity displayed in the Mozart arrangement is simply astounding. The other arrangements are just as fun and enjoyable. They are all easy on the ear and at no point does one feel that something is lacking due to this being all brass instruments with no strings, etc. On the contrary: everything sounds just right, almost as though these works were originally composed for brass ensemble.

I bought this because I love Tine Thing's other albums.
I knew that this was more of a Brass Band album but I love Brass Band anyway.
All of the Musicians (women) are outstanding and their blend is superb.
My only complaint ( if complaint is the right word) would be for the selections (or maybe the arrangements) although the Three Penny Opera was interesting
I know reviewers have stated that personal like or dislikes shouldn't be in reviews
but I think sometimes it's needed.
Fans of Tine may want this in their collection.

Best brass ensemble ever heard. As a bass trombonist, I am totally impressed. The precision and professionalism are amazing. Especially like the Grieg.
