Book Description

February 28, 2011
Images of the classical female figure are more prevalent in the contemporary figurative art world, as the nude male has been shunned as too potent or treated as a sex symbol. This book bravely showcases works by male and female artists from around the world that focus on this classic subject. Painting, drawings, and sculptures display broad and varied styles, including portraiture, studies, Pop Art, abstract, and photorealism. Read each artist's approach to the male figure through candid personal statements. Nearly 400 works capture masculine beauty in many styles. This resource brings balance to the figurative art world and is an ideal reference for artists, curators, dealers, students, and collectors.

From the dawn of humans on this earth, mankind has expressed its world through its artistic vision. With cavemen it was the prey of the hunt drawn on the walls of caves; with the Greeks and Romans it was sculptural nude images of the gods and male perfection and in the Renaissance it was a rediscovery of the male nude when artists heralded the male nude as the apotheosis of artistic creation.
In "100 artists of the male figure", E.Gibbons portray a vast array of artists whose artistic vision is the celebration of the male form. The beauty of these artists work and their genius is laid out before us to contemplate and admire. The book is grandly beautiful. E.Gibbons gives us these 100 artists living in our lifetime who make the male figure the central image in their art; this book is a "must have" for every artist and institution. It documents these artists of today. May this be only the first volume of such an anthology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Male Figure Painting--A World-Wide Assortment April 11, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
E. Gibbons has put together a remarkable book. One hundred painters of the male figure, for the most part nudes, in as many styles and points of view. Painting of the male as a subject is alive and very well. Beautifully produced on quality paper, in rich color, hardbound, this volume is required for every library of figurative art. Artists' comments and contact information are included, but the glorious images speak for themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Essential and Elemental Book September 6, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book fills a void, featuring the work of artists who celebrate the male figure in a manner that is neither sexual nor in any way apologetic. All styles and media are included save photography which has been covered elsewhere. The book itself and the reproductions are of a very high quality and the choice of artists is top notch. Being an artist of the male figure myself, I especially appreciate each artist's words on why they do what they do. It is heartening and inspiring to know that there are other men and women out there for whom the male figure is a constant source of inspiration and that they are thriving. Kudos to Mr Gibbons and all the artists included. This book belongs on the shelf of everyone who enjoys art featuring the male figure and is an invaluable reference to those of us who paint him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful look at a spectrum of talent June 23, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book was surprising in many ways. First, the format is terrific. The book is large, large enough to put a decent number of reproduction of the artists' work on each page with a précis of their career and what appears to be a self-selected photo or self-portrait. Second, although each artist receives about 2 pages for "coverage," the illustration don't come across as looking like thumbnails. The reproductions are sharp, with excellent color quality and are large enough to get a very good idea of the makers' style. Third, most of my favorite contemporary artists are included in the book which, on some level, testifies to its inclusiveness for me. Fourth, this book is not limited to "gay" art; while a lot of the art has erotic appeal, much of it appeals to classical or academic interests and the artists are a mix of men and women, with the sexual preferences of most not described. What links them is their approach and focus on the male figure and anatomy, again in a classical sense. The wide breadth of techniques shown, the links to additional references and personal websites, and affordable pricing all make this an excellent choice for lovers of figurative contemporary art.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Images April 24, 2011
By hampstr
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is terrific, filled with spectacular, sensual, artistic images. I'm the lucky owner of one of the paintings reproduced in this book so I have a vested interest in this becoming the definitive anthology of contemporary male nudes since it might increase the value of my painting. Well, it might make it a bit more valuable to my grandson who will inherit it someday. But self-interest aside, this is a great collection of art. And it's about time people started to acknowledge that there are beautiful, insightful, thought provoking images of male nudes that are not dirty pictures.

1.0 out of 5 stars Artists? I Don't Think So..... January 30, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Soft core eroticism of the male form by seemingly amateur, but dedicated, artists. Fantasy and sexual longings of the gay male.
It's like a gathering in someone's basement to show slightly naughty secrets to your friends.
