5.0 out of 5 stars Pas fou, September 23, 2000
This review is from: 100 Chansons (Audio CD)
Yes, he's le fou chantant, but Charles Trenet's music is by turns haunting, meditative, introspective, as well as, at times, simply silly. His silliness, which is just his delight in the myriad possibilities of any thought, may mask his seriousness, makes him seem less meritorious in the eyes of some intello-franc-philes. Pshaw. Il s'est tombe du ciel, vraiment. Enjoy him.

[money] for 100 songs!! I don't know French and haven't been partial to songs in foreign languages, but this album got me. I can hum along with the great tunes and the expressive voice. One of the great keepers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Trenet 100 chansons, November 21, 2010

This review is from: 100 Chansons (Audio CD)
Charles Trenet's songs are a delight to hear. Few composers combine words and music so well as Trenet does. Among the American composers only Cole Porter exhibits this quality, in my opinion. Irving Berlin only in a handful of his compositions shows this quality. Trenet's lyrics should only be allowed to be replaced by words in another language by a lyricist gifted with an understanding of the French language and the history of France at the time they were composed. It hurts the intelect to hear the words "La Mer qu'on voit dancer" transmuted into "Beyond the sea she's there waiting for me". The rest follows the same silly vein, in vain.
