Book Description

100 Classic Hikes May 2004
Written by the Oregon hiking legend, this is the only full-color guide to the best hikes throughout the state.

*Full-color photos, contour maps, and elevation profiles for each hike
*One third of the hikes have never before appeared in a guidebook
*Many of the routes described are loop hikes--no going back the way you came

What makes a trail a classic hike? Outstanding scenery, says Doug Lorain, especially good views. Add in mountain lakes and waterfalls. Sprinkle with wildflowers, old-growth forests, wildlife sightings, and interesting geologic features. All of the hikes Lorain has selected boast at least two of these attributes, and often more. These are simply the best hikes the state of Oregon has to offer. Lorain should know; he's logged more than 16,000 hiking miles in his boots.

Lorain presents a mix of the most popular trails and lesser-known gems throughout the entire state. Trailheads are easily accessible; trails are well established. They range from short, easy strolls suitable for children and grandparents to longer backpacking trips for experienced hikers. This is the deluxe guide with something for everyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Overview Maps Needed, August 27, 2008

This review is from: 100 Classic Hikes in Oregon: Oregon Coast, Columbia Gorge, Cascades, Eastern Oregon, Wallowas (Paperback)
The descriptions, color photos, and maps for the hikes are good. The weakness is that while the book is divided into 10 geographic sections, it lacks a map for each of these sections. For example, if you're considering hiking in the Central Cascades, it would be useful to study a map that locates all the hikes in the Central Cascades section of the book.

This book covers 100 hikes over the entire state. The hikes tend to be the best ones in a given area. The production values are extremely high, with color photos and color topo overlay maps throughout. If you want regional guides, then Sullivan's or the Portland/Vancouver volume of Lorain's are more thorough and have more hikes, but if you need one volume for the whole state, this is the one.

A great handbook to have with you. Lovely pictures, great details on the trails and difficulty levels, etc. and what you can expect along the trail.
