I checked this out from the library to review. I'm frequently disappointed by knitting and crochet books, so it seems best for me approach this type of book in that manner. After flipping through it a bit, I can say without hesitation that I will be buying this book. Although it's not the most exhaustive crochet motif pattern book I've seen, it seems to be the most carefully curated. It contains the more traditional granny squares and also some square motifs that might not necessarily be considered "granny" by everyone: flower blocks, webbed and spiked blocks, ripple patterns, geometric patterns, and even mitered squares for corners. Perhaps it should be titled "100 Colorful Square Motifs to Crochet." The instructions for the blocks are both written and charted.

In addition to the square patterns this book also contains a small sampling of edgings, embellishments (including ribbons, beads, cross stitch and embroidery), and joins. And there is advice on color choice and instruction in basic techniques.

I just love this book. It's complete enough for a beginner, and inspiring enough for intermediate to advanced stitchers. I can't wait to add it to my library.

I have tons of Granny square patterns which are usually minor variations of the same pattern. This book has finally offered new ideas and stitch pairing.

This book is inspiring! Everything from the beginner to the more advanced enthusiast is covered. It's a wonderful collection of traditional squares, as well as lots of new ones. Just picking it up is a joy because of the bright, cheery colors. I like the inclusion of edgings too, particularly the dangling flowers - so pretty! The instructions are clear and precise with wonderful photography. Sit down with your children or grandchildren with this book - show them the vibrant pictures - then delight them with how the picture comes to life in your hands! We need to teach our little ones to carry on this wonderful, creative pastime, and this book is a great way to do it! Want something a little more challenging? This book has that too. Charming and refreshing designs make this book a winner in my opinion. I recommend this book to everyone, as something you can come back to again and again. One day it will be passed down to the next generation as a wonderful teaching guide and inspiration for future projects. Highly recommended! (by Ken's wife!)

The thing about 100 Colorful Granny Squares to Crochet: Dozens of Mix and Match Combos and Fabulous Projects that caught my eye straight away were the vibrant colors on the cover and all throughout the book, I love that. I'm a fan of the granny square because it is so versatile and it is a staple in the art of crochet.

There's a Tools and Techniques section where topics like reading patterns and charts, color schemes, planning your projects, blocking and joining, and adding embellishments are discussed.

I like the wide variety of square patterns offered here, it's a nice eclectic mix. The possibilities are endless if you want fun square ideas for your next afghan. The square patterns are fun, colorful and funky.
I worked up the puff stitch heart square and turned it into a potholder. The pattern was very easy to follow and the instructions were clear. This square design would make for a great baby blanket.

I think that 100 Colorful Granny Squares to Crochet: Dozens of Mix and Match Combos and Fabulous Projects would make a great addition to any crocheters pattern book stash.

This review is my honest opinion. I did not receive any type of compensation for reading and reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers and designers, such as this one, I am under no obligation to write a positive review.
St. Martin's Griffin sent me a free copy of this pattern book in exchange for a possible review.

The author states, "An afghan in riotous colors isn't garish--it's gorgeous!" Well, maybe....

The cover is a good representation of the squares in the book. The colors are bright and bold, but also think pastel baby blankets. IF there were more color combinations for people who admire woodsy or more natural type combos, I would rate the book 5 stars. This book is for people who love bright primary or bright pastels. Of course, you can change the colors used, but I wish there was some more guidance in making natural color choices too.

In considering this book for review, a few things jumped out at me. The title says '100...squares', but each main square is counted as well as a 'stitch variation' of that square. So, for instance, there is a regular granny and then there is a variation using treble instead of double. Some variations are subtle like this; others are more obvious.

The projects are 'okay' and not the reason to buy the book. The individual square designs are pretty good, with some variety from the usual stuff. I do love the 'Yarn Requirement for throws' chart. Ranging from Baby, Lap, and Bed, this section will tell you how much yarn is needed to complete a blanket in these 3 sizes. Full color (of course!) photos and charts of each square are included in the patterns.

So, if you love bright, popping color, then go for it. If you want more guidance in combining say, browns, tans, and sage green, then you might want to look elsewhere.
