Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

From aspirin and Pepto Bismol to Tagament, estrogen, and Proscar, this guide evaluates common drugs that the average person will need at some point in his or her life. Oppenheim, a family physician, supplies useful cost comparisons and simplifies drug actions and potential adverse effects. As the author of consumer health books and numerous health articles for popular magazines, he has a true talent for translating technical details into readable prose. However, the failure to mention estrogen's potential role in causing breast cancer exemplifies his propensity for oversimplification. A more comprehensive text for the consumer like the United States Pharmacopeia's Complete Drug Reference ( LJ 6/1/91) not only describes more drugs (9000) but also furnishes more detailed information regarding the proper use of each drug . While 100 Drugs That Work will be useful for those who enjoy reading about the historical aspects of drug discoveries and who are interested in cost comparisons of the more common drugs, it is not a replacement for more encyclopedic references.

This review is from: 100 Drugs That Work: A Guide to the Best Prescription and Non-Prescription Drugs (Paperback)
This book was eye opening to me. Because the author limits his scope to 100 drugs, he was able teach me the philosophy and some history behind the creation of the most useful drugs of today. As an experienced physician, the author is able to insert is own opinions and experiences about his chosen top 100 drugs. This makes this book much more useful to the average person then those other "pill books" which cram thousands of drugs and mind boggling technical info into a single book. If you have found yourself caught up in, and maybe discouraged by, the "natural supplements" craze (like I have), then you may find this book will bring you back into the 20th centry of safe FDA approved drugs.
