5.0 out of 5 stars what most schroomers are interest in
As an avid schroomer and an educator in collecting and identifying mushrooms most folks I know always ask the question "is it edible?". This book helps to answer that question. The author also put enough caution into his book that a reader would find out that one can never be too careful when consuming wild mushrooms. The pictures and descriptions are excellant. The...

2.0 out of 5 stars Fun read, not helpful for quick indentifcation
Nice pictures and background on some fungi, but as an identification field guide it was not useful. You would have to read the whole book and memorize it for the useful information. It is not categorized in a way that you can easily get to the vital facts. There are old mushroom hunters and bold mushroom hunters, but no old bold mushroom hunters.

The author also goes into the relationship between certain trees and the mushroom itself. This helps the new schroomer know where to search for a certain species. A great help on this subject!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful guide!, October 7, 2008

This is my third mushroom guide, and so far is my favorite, followed closely by "Audubon's Field Guide to Mushrooms". The photos in Michael Kuo's book are wonderful, the descriptions are clear, and I especially like that it has a section especially for "beginners" (of which I am one) that describes a few edibles that aren't easily confused with anything else. This section has helped me to locate safe edibles in my area. I'm loving this book and carry it with me in my vehicle. You just never know when or where you might spot an interesting fungi! I highly recommend this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book for Shroomers, NOT MANY RECIPES., September 22, 2008

This review is from: 100 Edible Mushrooms (Paperback)
This is a lovely big paperback with great prose, super photos, and lots of interesting facts. The author has a fun sense of humor and I often laugh out loud while reading it. HOWEVER, I bought this book because it was advertised as a mushroom book/cookbook. There are only a few recipes, and many of the mushrooms listed get a recommendation like, "replace the chanterelles in X recipe with these boletes" In other words, few recipes with a lot of uses. I expected at least half a cookbook. I'm glad I have it, and I have been using it and enjoying it, but don't buy it if all you want is the recipes.

This review is from: 100 Edible Mushrooms (Paperback)
Kuo's 100 Edible Mushrooms is a fantastic addition to any mushroomer's library. Fairly new to mushrooms, I found this book to be very easily read and understood; the information is very thorough. The focus points were a great addition to the text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mushroom ID Book, January 6, 2009
This review is from: 100 Edible Mushrooms (Paperback)
I purchased this for my mushroom hunting brother in law for Christmas. I wanted to make sure that what he found and ate was safe as I really do love him. After looking over a number of books, both online and in bookstores, I ordered this. It is a super book with tons of information. He loved it so much he stopped unwrapping Christmas presents to read his new book. I was very pleased with the quality, information and price.

Entertaining, good photos/descriptions of edible mushrooms and look-alikes, well-organized, nice introductory information for beginners. Makes an excellent supplement to a more general guide.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, July 22, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 100 Edible Mushrooms (Paperback)
This is a beautiful book that is a wonderful addition to my collection of mushroom books. The large, full color photos are especially appreciated.

I do not believe that it is suitable for a beginner because the narrative descriptions are not concise enough to rule out identification mistakes -- particularly in eager newbies who may try too hard to make a mushroom fit the descriptions.

If you want beginner-to-intermediate concise, foolproof keys for avoiding poisonous mushrooms, get David Fischer's Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America.

But if you want to expand your knowledge of mushrooms and enjoy reading well written and sometimes entertaining mushroom lore in easy-to-understand plain English, you will love this book.

All the measurements are metric. Since my brain refuses to make the conversion, I read the descriptions with a ruler that features inches and centimeters in hand.

The section on poisonous mushrooms is especially good, and the Focus Points are great.

Highly recommended.
