This is simply the best hiking books I've ever owned (and I own a lot!) A great selection of hikes, well written descriptions and directions, and excellent maps. I've been on over 30 of Sullivan's recommended hikes and enjoyed them enormously. The photos are beautiful. Get this book, get out and enjoy the wilderness!

An indispensable guide to hiking the Oregon Cascades. It contains all the information that you will need to find your way around in these spectacular mountains. The information on lodging and camping is also very helpful.

Some books open a whole new world to the reader, and this well-written, highly informative, good-humored hiker's guide is one of them. I bought an earlier version when I first moved to Central Oregon, coming from Central California. In short order this book helped me see more of Central Oregon than many lifetime natives had experienced. The clear descriptions of how to get to the destinations, the tips on wildlife and plant life, the simple rating systems, the symbols for dog and kid friendly hikes: Wow! My life is richer for this book! This is a can't miss book, and it is also a whoppingly good gift idea for any friend that is either going to move to or visit Central Oregon.

I have three of Sullivan's guides, all of them excellent, but this one is my favorite. It's filled with excellent descriptions, directions and interesting factoids. Unlike many hiking guides, this one goes out of its way to list family friendly hikes in addition to its many iron man treks. It covers the Santiam Foothills near Salem to the Mt. Jefferson and Sisters Wildernesses, down to the Mckenzie Foothills and Willamette pass. It's been great for my family to find little gems like McDowell Creek Falls and the Ankeny Wildlife Refuge. Can't recommnend this book enough.

William Sullivan is Oregon's hiker laureate. In these parts, there is a simple rule: if Bill is the author of a hiking-related guide book, it is worth purchasing. That is certainly the case with his Central Oregon Cascades book. I have visited many new places thanks to this book, and eventually hope to do all of the hikes listed herein.

This book will open a whole new world of day hikes and backpacking trips to the reader that just looking at a map cannot hold a candle to! Hand drawn maps of every hike are very helpful and easy to understand. Breakdown and description of hike not only help guide you but will help you decide which hikes are best for you. Even if you already hike(like I did and do) you should read this book because there are so many great hikes out there you may not be aware of.

This is a superlative hiking guide to central Oregon that sets the standard for all hiking books. In addition to the 100 hikes described in detail, there are 100+ additional hikes for both people with limited access and the more adventurous. Each of the 100 hikes is described in fine detail, from driving directions to trail junctions to water sources and camp sites. No other resource is needed for trip planning, and one needs only a compass and a topo map on the trails with this guide in hand. The text is so well written that I use it for relaxation reading in addition to hike planning. The book is updated annually to incorporate the latest changes in the trail. My only suggestion is that perhaps in future editions the Three Sisters Loop and Mount Jefferson Wilderness traverse could somehow be included in the guide. Job well done!

Since I have spent the better part of my life hiking in the Central Cascades of Oregon, I thought I would buy the book to expand my knowledge of the area and to also review some of my many treks. The book is well organized and provides many details for each hike that includes accurate directions to each destination. Well worth the investment.

This is a very well-organized and informative book. We will use it on our next trip to the central Oregon area.

Best book for Central Oregon hiking. With this book you won't need anything else, no more books...you won't even need a map.

Sullivan provides an area map AND a trail map for each hike, so you can see clearly how to get to the trailhead AND get a three-dimensional view of the trail, too.
