Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This compilation is entertaining and informative, and provides a nice overview of some of the main topics studied by film school students. Lavishly illustrated with photographs and stills from hundreds of films, Parkinson's book democratically covers a wide variety of genres, time periods, and nationalities in discussing the development of the film world's tropes and practices. This is both its strong point and its greatest weakness, because in his effort to be inclusive, Parkinson loses the reader's attention with long lists of foreign-language filmmakers and films that very few American readers will have heard of. Still, this is a fun book to own, and since each chapter is less than two pages long, it definitely fills the need for an interesting bed-time or bathroom read.
