5.0 out of 5 stars not at all disappointed March 3, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm on my second listen and really digging this recording. I wasn't a huge fan of a mad and faithful telling, but this album is almost on par with how it ends, grabbing with with depth and feeling, and passion, like. Honestly I think these guys have much more depth and passion than beirut or calexico which they are often compared. There is an intensity, and subtle tension, and I find it moving, it really makes you feel something. It sometimes has a bit of 80's feel but I forgive it when I hear it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Transcendant! April 6, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
What an amazing album. While I had heard of Devotchka before (Little Miss Sunshine, etc.), this was the first album of theirs I actually purchased. I am so glad I did! I have since gotten their previous 2 albums - both of which I highly recommend. I can't think of another recent album that displays such a high level of talent, musicianship and beauty. Devotchka, and this album in particular, has been my best musical discovery of this year!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is in no way objective March 1, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
Since this is my favorite band, they can do no wrong. I may update this with a more objective, substantive review, but for now, I will just say, if you're not listening to DeVotchKa, you're really missing out on something wonderful.

Hagerman's violin has never sounded better - King's drumming keeps every song together - Schroder's haunting bass line - Urata's voice wounds and heals in the same breath. How does this compare to previous albums? It's DeVotchKa as they continue to evolve, hard to classify - completely eclectic. There are elements of Supermelodrama present in "Exhaustible". "Bad Luck Heels" shares trumpets with "We're Leaving" and "Along the Way". Is there a "Queen of the Surface Streets"? A "Transliterator"? A "How it Ends"? Of course, but it'll be something completely subjective - something that speaks to you as the listener, not me. For me, right now, it's "All the Sand in all the Sea"...

**Update.

Okay, after listening to the album 3 times now, I can say that there is a much heavier Latin influence on this record, perhaps due to guest performances by Mark Refrosco and members of Calexico. Without the liner notes, it's hard to know what songs they perform on, though. It's much more drum-driven than A Mad and Faithful Telling, but it's a welcome progression for the band. Far more than progressive rock, it's global in scope, with complex rhythms that defy categorization in one genre.

The standouts for me so far are "All the Sand..", "The Alley", "Exhaustible," "Bad Luck Heels" and "Sunshine".

Fans of Gogol Bordello, Calexico, Beirut and A Hawk and Hacksaw, should be pleased with DeVotchKa's new album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Creativity and Performance! March 7, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I came upon this by accident. I have never heard of Devotchka but happened to be in a book store one day where they were playing this CD. While I was browsing I kept getting images of the Beatles Sgt. Peppers (probably due to the heavy use of strings and backwards effects), as it progressed one song seemed to flow into the next and I was immediately taken. The voice and the lyrics were interesting and very identifiable. So I decided to buy a copy. I have listened to this CD about 4 times now and I really do find it very original and it has great depth. I am a very big progressive rock fan, a fan of bands like Porcupine Tree, Transatlantic, Dream Theater, Pink Floyd etc. And I found this to fit right in with my tastes. It doesn't necessarily sound the like hard core progressive rock but it does have overtones of music like Peter Gabriels, more universal sounding. A very, very good purchase and I recommend it if you like a more global progressive sound. Some interesting latin soundscapes are also included on the last couple of tracks. This CD is a refreshing surprise!

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprise of 2011 July 23, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
This should be rated more of a 4.2 stars, but I couldn't justify bumping to 5. It has a strong start to the lineup, as well as a polished close, but the tracks in between are mediocre filler in a shuffle. Tracks 1-4 bring up the grade on their own. "All the Sand in All the Sea" and "The Common Good" are epics. After the album middles out, it comes to a strong close from "Ruthless" to "Sunshine". Plain and simple, this was one of the most pleasant surprises of 2011 for someone not very familiar with Devotchka, except for notable tracks from "Little Miss Sunshine."

4.0 out of 5 stars What a fun album. December 19, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
I came across Devotchka on KCRW, and I fell for them immediately. I mainly bought this for 100 Other Lovers, but the rest of the album held my attention fairly well. I don't know if I would classify this as one of my favorites, but still a definite must for someone looking to branch out their musical tree.

Smooth and fun cd. After the first 5 songs they start to sound the same, but they are great.
