Book Description

February 5, 2007 100 Places
With its breezy reviews and insightful advice, 100 Places Every Woman Should Go encourages women of any age to see the world — in a group, with a friend, or solo — and inspires them to create their own list of dreams. Based on her own explorations of many countries, states, and regions, and on interviews with travelers, award-winning author Stephanie Elizondo Griest highlights 100 special destinations and challenging activities — from diving for pearls in Bahrain to racing a camel, yak, or pony across Mongolia; to dancing with voodoo priestesses in Benin and urban cowboys in Texas; to taking a mud bath in a volcano off the coast of Colombia. Divided into such sections as “Places Where Women Made History,” “Places of Indulgence,” and “Places of Adventure,” this guidebook includes timely contact information, resources, and recommended reading. “Ten Tips For Wandering Women” features safety precautions plus pointers on haggling, packing, and staying parasite-free. Vivid portraits of free spirits like Frida Kahlo (“A tequila-slamming, dirty joke-telling smoker, this famous artist was bisexual and beautiful”) help travelers expand their experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wanderlust April 20, 2007
Format:Paperback
I must admit to initially being skeptical about this book, as I usually find 'Top 10'-style lists to be superficial. But this book highlights fascinating places I didn't even know existed, or that I never imagined visiting. All of them have a women's slant -- be it a place where a heroine "made history"(like the plaza in Buenos Aires where the 'Mothers of the Disappeared' march every Thursday to protest the disappearance of their children during the war) or a place inhabited by a goddess or deity (like a Hawaiian volcano worshiped by locals because the goddess Pele lurks within) or a woman-owned business (like the first women-owned sex shop: Good Vibrations in San Francisco). The author makes an effort to point out socially responsible destinations, such as "fair trade" sites, eco-lodges, and women's cooperatives, as well as places to do volunteer work. The writing-style is very upbeat: funny in some places, poignant in others, and inspirational throughout!

5.0 out of 5 stars Get inspired! April 9, 2007
Format:Paperback
Reading this book makes you want to grab a pen and paper and start your own list of "must visit" places. And many of the places Griest has described should be on your list! From the best ice cream in the world, to the proper way to bathe in a Japanese bath house, to floating the Ganges at sunrise, to two-stepping in Texas, she has compiled an extensive collection of special places for women to be nourished, inspired, and entertained. This is not your typical travel guide; instead, she offers a unique perspective on adventures that will take you deep into the true spirit of a place or people. Her personal observations will make you laugh, and the additional resources will help you plan your own trip to these amazing places - or inspire you to find your own. Don your traveling shoes, tuck this book into your backpack, and get out there and experience life!

4.0 out of 5 stars For women of all ages September 16, 2008
Format:Paperback
This book is like reading letters from a college buddy on the road. It was really inspiring to hear about all of quirky yet helpful histories from around the world, giving a deeper layer to traveling. Love the little know histories, loved the shopping advice, just loved the fact that this book is written by a woman for women of all ages. Good job Stephanie!

2.0 out of 5 stars 100 places every woman should go
The book is very superficial in descriptions of places. I was disappointed to say the least and would not recommend the book unless you want just a few lines of information.
