smart and funny, and embarrassing!,

If you have every read ANYTHING in public, and if you have first said a "few" words before getting to the main text, then you have probably done a "pre-read blush." Blitz's book is a hilarious collection of these kinds of "apologies" that poets give before they read poems out loud. I don't know if these are things poets have really said or if Blitz made them up (I suspect the latter), but they are so weird and funny! One of my favorites is: "I read this poem to my lover, once. She smiled and turned away. When I touched her shoulder, to ask her what she thought of the poem, she disintegrated into a thousand pieces of paper." I have always liked poetry, but I also have always worried that I don't "get " a lot of it. I definitely "got" these "blushes." The next time I hear a public speakers, I'm going to listen to see what they say before they get around to reading the main stuff. I bet they "blush," too! In fact, I know I've done some pre-read blushing myself!
