Book Description

April 13, 2004 100 Simple Secrets Series

The Simple Science of a Happy Family

From raising children to getting along with in-laws, what do people with close and loving families do differently than those with strained or unfulfilling relationships? Sociologists, therapists, and psychiatrists have spent entire careers investigating the ins and outs of family dynamics, yet their findings are inaccessible to ordinary people, hidden in obscure journals to be shared with other experts. Now, David Niven, the international bestselling author of The 100 Simple Secret series has collected the most current and significant data from more than a thousand of the best scientific studies on families and then spelled out the findings in plain English.

The advice is based not on one person's unique experiences or opinions, but offers for the first time the research of noted scientists studying average American families. These findings have been boiled down to one hundred essential ways to find and maintain love, joy, and satisfaction in all family relationships. Each statistic is accompanied by a true story about a real family showing the results in action.

Don't Forget the Past: Parents who share stories of family history with their children create higher levels of concern for family members and increase the likelihood of their children's happiness.

No Price Tag: Once basic necessities are met, the increasing economic status of one's family has zero effect on the likelihood of feeling satisfied with life.

Let Every Opinion Be Heard: Senior citizens having trouble living in their own homes are 84 percent more likely to be satisfied with their housing situation if they feel as if their concerns are an important part of selecting a new home or facility.

The Greatest Gift: Life satisfaction is 72 percent more likely among those who feel content with their family life.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Read, but Scientific?, August 29, 2006
By
Suz (Fort Worth, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 100 Simple Secrets of Happy Families: What Scientists Have Learned and How You Can Use It (100 Simple Secrets Series) (Paperback)
This book is a pleasant and inspirational read. It's a good book to pick up and put down, as each chapter is independent of one another and takes only a few minutes to read. I question its claim that it is based upon "the research of noted scientists," as a quick scan of its reference pages show that a high percentage of the studies cited come from doctoral dissertations. Hardly the stuff that "sociologists, therapists, and psychiatrists have spent entire careers investigating".

I questioned some of the more startling claims made by Dr. Niven based upon some of these dissertations, but even going to the universities' websites, I was unable to obtain copies of the original papers in order to determine the accuracy of his interpretation, and indeed of the studies themselves. A search of the authors of the dissertations did not indicate that they had gone on in any way to distinguish themselves in their field.

So, that being said, I have found it an enjoyable book to read, but one that I will not be relying upon for necessarily accurate information or statistics. I give it a 4 for enjoyment and a 2 for credible research.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dee Lundgren, counselor in Newtown, PA, December 3, 2010
This review is from: 100 Simple Secrets of Happy Families: What Scientists Have Learned and How You Can Use It (100 Simple Secrets Series) (Paperback)
Short chapters with nuggets of truth about family life. Not real profound stuff but the chapters end with a result from a research study. However, not real impressed with the correlations made because they do not indicate cause and effect. For example people who receive a large inheritance are less likely than others to be satified with life. This statistic alone can be misleading because it does not say that the reason for this dissatisfaction is due to getting the inheritance but that there is a correlation. It is an easy read but not real inspiring.
