B+ album; people are being a little hard on this one,

OK so if you are a die-hard Robert Smith & Co. fan hung up on the nostalgia of classic, unadulterated Cure tunes, then it's true - you probably won't appreciate this album. Especially if you aren't an industrial/goth fan. You'll hate this album as much as you might hate "New Wave Goes to Hell" - another goth cover album a lot of people accuse of "perverting" everybody's favorite 80s hits. Whatever.THAT being said, if you enjoy losing yourself every now and then in a little Laether Strip, Shroud, Skinny Puppy, Kill Switch...Klick, Christian Death, what have you AND you can approach with an open mind the subject of other bands daring to manipulate the Cure's genius - you'll love it. Sure, the vocalists don't sound like Robert Smith, they AREN'T Robert Smith. And I don't think they're trying to be. This is not an endeavor to "improve" the Cure - just an attempt to pay tribute to them and to have a little fun. I adore this album, it offers up exciting new twists on some classics - most have a darker edge and the addition of some fierce dance beats uncharacteristic of the Cure, but nevertheless exhilarating.

An interesting mix...,

The " Lullabye " cover by Leatherstrip is the best { not better than the original has another reviewer suggested }; perfection would have been achieved by inserting Robert Smith's voive instead of the Leatherstip vocalist, who doesn't have much range.Nosferatu's cover of " 100 years " is also exceptional, the second best cover here, but with the best vocals going to Nosferatu frontman Dominic LeVay! Personally, I too think people expected a bit too much mch from a Cleopatra tribute album! Elecrtic Hellfire make their obvius contractual obligation to appear on EVRY SINGLE tribute/complilation album Cleopatra has EVER made with " Killing an Arab " which is well done musically, but the vocals are just too cartoonish and " I wanna be evil "; lacking the elegance to cover a Cure song. I at first despised Razed in Black's cover of Disintergration { and I'm an electronic muscian! } but it's grown on me a little { still not big on the vocals }; it IS an original approcah to the song. { doesn't make me forget the original }. I also like Death Lies Bleeding's industrial/metal approcah to " A Forest " with the creey whispering vocals; it's a uniuqe appoarch to a song too often covered in the goth/industrial underground.

A great tribute to a great band,

I love this tribute to The Cure. The bands paying tribute are all really good industrial/gothic bands. Leaether Strip's version of Lullaby is incredible. There are actually a number of songs from this CD I really enjoyed. 100 Years by Nosferatu, Jumping Someone Else's Train by Kill Switch ... Klick, Sinking by The Shroud (Really good), Let's Go to Bed by Crocodile Shop, Shake Dog Shake by Ex-Voto (exceptional), Pornography by Wreckage, A Night Like This by Test Infection (great), A Forest by Death Lies Bleeding, and Primary by Bell, Book and Candle. That is ten songs on a 13 song CD that I really liked. I can't say much more about how good this disc is than that. This is an industrial classic, and a wonderful and complex tribute to The Cure.

This album enhances Robert Smith's artistic creations into a modern cyber-infested spectrum of sounds. I grew up listening to the Cure, and now belong to a very prominent Industrial band. This tribute echos the attitudes of modern goth/industrial scenes, while preserving the essence of what created our underground family.

a gripping industrial/goth masterpiece,

very rarely does a tribute album turn out to be just as good as the bands original work. this is one such case. other tributes to the cure in the past have been lame. some have come up short in talent or just love for the music. every one of the bands on this album believed the cure inspired them in an unimaginable way. you can see it in the rendition of sinking by the shroud. the passion of razed in black's disintigratrion. the absurdly blind hatred in electric hellfire club's killing an arab. the cold chill of fear in leaether strip's lullaby. to sum this album up in one word: outstanding.

What were they thinking???,

I adore The Cure. They are great live or in the studio. Their songs have a uniqueness that cannot be heard in any other music. This tribute cheapens The Cure. It sounds nothing like them. It's not a type of music I enjoy. However, you must be your own judge. If you are a Cure fan, listen to some of these samples and ask yourself if they are at all like the original. I don't see how it would be possible for any true Cure fan to own this.

I first heard this cd from a friend of mine who had borrowed it from his friend: we both listened to it for the first time and were fairly dissapointed. I can understand perhaps liking the songs if i had never heard the originals. But i love the original songs by the Cure, so these seem like poor, bastardized facsimilies of once Curesong greatness...I like industrial and Goth but for the most part these bands do not maintain the passion, originality and personality that is in the originals, enfused by massive oozing Robert Smith goodness......no that sure doesn't show up here. No one can equal Robert Smiths voice, let alone song flavor and flow. I give it two stars though, for Lets Go To Bed covered by Crocodile Shop, for the amazing hilariousness of their cover, and for Sinking covered by The Shroud which is fairly true in styling to the original, almost to the point of mistaking it for the original until they start to sing. So basically, I do not recommend this album, but do find some manic Cure-head and borrow it from them so you can tape the good tracks........but don't spend the money for this CD......

Ohhh the agony,

I'm disappointed to say that this album is awful. I love the Cure, and it's totally sad to see the beautiful masterpiece original songs screwed up and "modernized" by today's industrial/goth bands. Plus, the Cure's songs are way awesome in the first place not only because the amazing poetic lyrics, but also due to Robert Smith's unique and groovy voice which further defines the moods of the songs and words. Without his voice the songs seem to be missing their souls. As a Cure fan, I bought this album just to have all the Cure's CDs, but I advise everyone not to waste their money on this and get Standing on a Beach- the Singles, or The Cure's: Galore (both are Cure cd's that anyone will love).

"gothy" covers of some classic cure,
By Mark Shoe "slowdowner" (Omaha, NE USA) - See all my reviews

I admit I wasn't expecting much from this tribute. I bought it mostly out of curiousity. It is actually a pleasant surprise. I'm not a huge fan of goth but hearing cure songs covered by some straight-forward goth bands was actually pretty interesting. This album does help prove Robert Smith's contention that the Cure was never a goth band. I've always been drawn to the Cure's darker element, though I do love the "Kiss me" album. Most of these songs stay true to the original versions while adding a bit of the cover band's personality. Not as bad as some of these reviews would lead you to believe...

DISAPPOINTED!,

This review is from: 100 Tears: Tribute to the Cure (Audio CD)
As an avid Cure fan for approximately 15 years, I was excited to find this CD. Unfortunately, after listening to the awful tracks, I wish I hadn't bought it. These bands obviously do not understand the music of the Cure - all of the tracks on the CD do not in any way capture the surreal essence of the Cure's music and lyrics. My recommendation? Invest in some more obscure Cure import CD's or singles, but please do not waste your money on this!
