1.0 out of 5 stars $100 Tivo service gift card
This was worthless unless you know not to activate your Tivo prior to receipt of the gift card. Somehow I think it is designed to do just that it cannot be used for anything ELSE! Good it was so-called free!

This is a $100 TiVo service gift card that can only be applied to a new service activation. It cannot be applied to an existing account. You can use this in conjunction with a new activation in a multi-service account. You must provide a credit card with activation and use of this card to handle any balance this card may not cover in your agreement. And you will probably sign up for at least a one year service contract which will be well more than $100. May not be used to purchase TiVo merchandise. Only for new activations. So if you already have a TiVo account and want to apply this card to your account you can not. If you are purchasing a new TiVo or adding another TiVo service to your account then this can be applied to your new service. Not exactly what I thought it was. If your thinking about giving this as a gift, just make sure the recipient is going to activate a TiVo with it.

When acquired in a bundle, as I did, this was icing on the cake for a sweet deal on a new Tivo. Series 2 Tivo for $99 with this thrown in? its like paying you 1 dollar to try Tivo.

Getting this gift card allows you to get TiVo's program listings service. It's possible to use TiVo without it, but a big pain in the butt. And this gift card is worth about 10 months of service.

I used my gift card for my new subscription but Tivo still charged my bank account the entire amount anyway-- even though it said it would only charge me $29. When I called the next day, they were friendly and said it would be fixed immediately.

Tivo designed the card so poorly such that the redemption code is visible without opening the plastic packaging, making the job of a thief extremely easy! In Nov. 2007, I ordered a $100 gift card along with a tivo box, directly from Amazon. However, it turns out that the gift card code is invalid. Called Tivo. They said the card had been redeemed in October already! Amazon would not send a replacement card. Only after many calls to Tivo, Tivo agreed to send a replacement.

I got this gift card along with my new Tivo Dual tuner DVR. It was very easy to just log on to Tivo's site and use this gift card. The only negative thing I would say is that the amount doesn't cover a full year, which would have been a nice even touch, but I'm certainly not complaining! It made it very easy to sign up for the Tivo service, and this was my first experience with Tivo!

1.0 out of 5 stars Unless you hate your parents don't get them involved with Tivo, February 6, 2011
This review is from: $100 TiVo Service Gift Card (Electronics)
My son gave me a 3-month Tivo subscription. I did not like having to give Tivo a credit card number just to initialize the service but did not want to appear ungrateful to my son so gave Tivo my credit card number. The Tivo box and Comcast box did not play well together and after a few weeks I disconnected the Tivo equipment and telephoned Tivo to cancel the subscription, well in advance of the 3-month cut off date. (Be advised: a root canal is preferable to getting a Tivo customer service rep to cancel an account and the individual I spoke with soon became belligerent but I persisted and was told the account was canceled.) Soon thereafter I had to replace my computer and in the process lost archived email, presumably including the cancellation confirmation from Tivo. Retrospectively, now that I've researched Tivo's unethical practices, I know that if such an email was sent I should have printed it out so as to have a hard copy and I strongly urge anyone dealing with the Tivo corporation to follow up subscription cancellations with a certified letter, copying your attorney to be on the safe side.

The first month following cancellation my credit card was charged $6. I assumed it was some sort of reconciliation charge and the amount was small so I did not investigate. The next month Tivo charged my credit card $14. Within hours of that charge appearing on my account I got on the telephone to find out what was going on. It took an hour, 4 phone calls, numerous transfers, and 2 dropped calls to get to the Tivo billing department. Tivo verified that my equipment had not been installed for the last 2.5 months but denied any record of my canceling the subscription and refused to issue a credit for the $6 & $14 charges. They sent a new cancellation confirming email and I will take my own advice and follow it up with a certified letter. Long story short: my son paid $50 for the gift card, I've spent another $20, for which I received less than 1 month of Tivo service and if I can extricate myself from involvement with the company for a mere $70 will consider myself one lucky lady compared to others of Tivo's victims.

What I found on the web are horror stories from former Tivo customers who have had the same problem with Tivo denying that they've canceled their subscription, then charging them hundreds of dollars, and when the credit card is canceled, damaging their credit. For one poor fellow it went on for years with him doing charge backs every month.

The problem is after you've had that root canal with the Tivo sales rep who tries to Tony Soprano you into continuing your Tivo subscription, and you've rejected all his arguments and attempted manipulations, he's the guy who's supposed to follow through with the cancellation. Do you see the problem here? Tivo gives the job of counting the dead hens to the fox. Surprise, surprise, some of those dead hens disappear!

I put myself in the shoes of a Tivo sales rep whose job it is to keep customers from canceling their subscriptions. Do I finish canceling the subscription from this fish who has just rejected all my best pitches and demands cancellation or do I take another another phone call and hope to persuade the next one not to cancel, thereby garnering a sales commission? Let's see, money in my pocket versus wading through a labyrinth of computer screens in a process that will reflect poorly on my employee performance. Doh! The problem with Tivo's system is so glaring that it cannot be unintentional and the volume of web reports about it support that inappropriate credit card charges and denial of cancellation is part of Tivo's business plan.

I like the premise of Tivo's product and was disappointed it would not work with our other equipment. It's a shame when a good product is backed up with shoddy business practices.

1.0 out of 5 stars "Gift" card, November 24, 2007
This review is from: $100 TiVo Service Gift Card (Electronics)
When I purchased the Tivo that came with this card, I thought, "What can I lose? The "Gift Card" will offset the price of the Tivo." I was replacing an existing Tivo that did not have the capability of recording/watching two programs. When I tried to activate the "Gift Card", I found that it is valid for NEW service only. I believe that this disclaimer should be somewhere in the product description.
