I love this book. It is very accurate and descriptive. It gives all the information needed to hike these trails. The trailhead descriptions are easy to locate and the trail directions are easy to follow. It was on one of these trails that I had my first up-close encounter with a black bear and her cub. No problems. Whew...

I recently had the pleasure of meeting the author of this book on a trail in the Smokies. He was taking notes of changes since the last edition of his 100 Hikes in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park book. This tells me that he keeps up to date of changes.


I enjoy this book enough to also own another of Russ Manning's books. 40 Hikes in Tennessee's South Cumberland which is a book I highly reccommend also.

This book had excellent descriptions of the trails, and despite trail markings that were sometimes difficult to follow, the book guided us through comfortably. That being said, the book has at least one blatant error in it. The book says you do not need to register to camp in the back country, but we learned that this is false. Back country registration is required, and there is a $5 fee for each party of 6 or less.

100 Trails of the Big South Fork: Tennessee & Kentucky (100 Hikes In...)
I've only flipped through this book so far, but just seeing it in my living room is a reminder that I need to go there to do some hiking. My grandmother grew up in this area, and I have visited there many times in my life. I know how beautiful and peaceful it is, and I ordered this book so that when my husband and I go for a visit, we can research these trails so we can see more of the area. The book has many details about each hike that makes planning a hiking vacation very easy. If you are visiting this area, this book is a "must have" so you don't miss all the area has to offer.
