I live up in the Pacific Northwest where it is wet constantly. I use Hope's Tung Oil to finish all the wood handles on my knives and axes, and for that purpose nothing is better than 100% tung oil.

Follow the instructions on the bottle: sand the wood before application and between coats; rub in with a clean cotton rag. Do not leave excess oil pooled up on the wood to dry, or you will end up with a mess. Rub off the excess with a rag.

The more you put on, the richer the finish. You can't apply too many coats. I apply two coats to start with, when buying a new piece of kit -- and then apply another coat at the end of each camping season. It will keep the metal from rusting too.

You can use sand paper to apply the oil on the final coat, to force the oil deep into the pores. It sure does leave a beautiful finish, especially on tropical woods.

*** CAUTION: Burn your rags when done. Tung oil is like linseed oil: rags used to apply the oil can spontaneously combust if left to sit. It is better to burn them in a controlled manner than have them ignite in your garage or trash can while your sleeping! ***

It got here fast, before the due date. This has not always been my experience with some resellers, so I was pleasantly surprized.
It was easy to apply and my table looks beautiful. It didn't change the tint of the table, as some stains do. It just darkened it slightly and really brought out the grain of the wood. It's not a high gloss shine like you would get with shellac, more of a natural glow which I much prefer. I also like that it is one hundred percent oil, no chemicals or toxins. I would definitly buy it again, though it won't be soon. I did my whole dining room table with this little bottle, and the bottle is still more than half full!

Many products labeled "tung oil finishes" contain solvents and/or other oils - tung oil may not even be the #1 ingredient. Hope's Tung Oil is 100% tung oil yet costs no more than the imposters. I've used this product on furniture and on kitchen items (e.g. pepper mills and cutting boards), always with excellent results.

Other commenters have expressed various personal opinions on the food safety of tung oil. I'll refer everyone to the official approval: entering "Sec. 175.300 Resinous and polymeric coatings" in your search engine retrieves the US Code of Federal Regulations FDA listing of coatings that "may be safely used as the food-contact surface". Paragraph (b) (3) (i), Drying Oils, lists chinawood (tung) oil.

This approval is only for 100% tung oil and does not apply if the oil has been diluted with a non-food-safe solvent such as mineral spirits. So to use Hope's in the kitchen, apply it undiluted or purchase a non-toxic solvent (e.g. Real Milk Paint Citrus Solvent, available on Amazon).

I am using this tung oil on an old M14 walnut rifle stock. After sanding it down a bit (using fine grit sandpaper) to remove years of dirt, sweat and who knows what else - I applied this tung oil everyday for 1 week. This oil is amazing, and the walnut stock looks brand new. It has a thick consistency that seems to penetrate the wood fibers and gives it a "glow". I'm sure it would work just as well on other wood applications. Highly recommended, 5 stars!

I like that this is not mixed with mineral spirits and is so easy to apply....just use fine steel wool between coats. I used it to re-finish a mid-century bed headboard and the results were spectacular. It also goes a long way...don't need to use much. I would definitely use this again.

I got this to use as a finish on some shelves I built for our dining room and bathroom. The look is fantastic and this oil really helped pull out the natural grain of the wood I used. The wood I used was a long board of Wenge, which is already very high quality, but the tung oil pushed it that extra notch on the quality wheel.

This was my first time using tung oil, so a bit of advice which you'll also find on any google search for "how to apply tung oil" is this: 1) make sure your wood is sanded down extremely well to get that nice smooth texture 2) use multiple coats of the oil--at least 2-3 if not many more 3) when applying, do so with a little bit at a time in thin layers--if you accidentally put a large amount in one spot then you'll have a very dark area on your board because you've oversaturated the wood. Luckily, even when it's dark it still looks nice but you lose a lot of the detail that the tung oil was supposed to bring out.

Have used Hopes tung oil for years on furniture I make. Nice soft satin finish and durable. My biggest use is as a finish for the interior wooden window sashes in my home. In colder climates all windows form condensation on the glass and wooden mullions. Tung oil finish doesn't peel off and stands up to this condensation. I just wipe down the mullions every couple of years. No bad odor when applying. Added 2/25/2013--- Make sure to squeeze the bottle before putting the cap back on. This gets out excess air which causes oil to harden in bottle. Also, it should be noted that tung oil is not "food safe". Use mineral oil on wooden surfaces that involve food.
