4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, funny, helpful and heartwarming, December 31, 2009
This review is from: 100 Ways To Develop Your Mind: The Psychology Of The Mind And How To Develop Your Mind To Change Your Life (Paperback)
When I received this book, I was expecting a series of pages with good, one-line tips. I'd have been happy with that.

Instead, this book is a delightful adventure through brilliant quotations, think-outside-of-the-box exercises, and thoughtful essays. For me, it's the equivalent of a walk on the beach with the salt air clearing out the mental cobwebs.

I laughed at some pages (as an artist, the comment about some art struck me funny), got a little misty-eyed over others, and -- in general -- I was very impressed with how fresh and different this book is.

Some of the themes will be familiar to people who've read a lot of self-help material. Oh, it's still valid, and I appreciate the author's different views on those topics.

However, this book shines on the many pages where the concepts and suggestions are highly original, easier to accomplish, and more effective than what many self-help gurus recommend.

Frankly, until I read this book, no one ever told me to stand on a chair for such a clever purpose. (That's number seven of the hundred ways to develop your mind, and the reasoning behind it is innovative and fun.)

I'll recommend this book to friends who like The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles. Many of the exercises in this book are ideal for creative people who need to get unstuck right away, where they are.

This is the kind of book I'll keep on my desk and refer to when a project has become too much by-the-numbers, or when I'm running low on enthusiasm and need something to restore my interest, energy and optimism.

I'm looking forward to reading more books by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and thought provoking in small doses, January 1, 2010
This review is from: 100 Ways To Develop Your Mind: The Psychology Of The Mind And How To Develop Your Mind To Change Your Life (Paperback)
I'm not a huge fan of page-per-thought books but for some reason Steven's new book has got me captivated.

Each page usually starts with a brilliant quote (some of which I have started squirrelling away for my own use)and many of his ideas (like stand on a chair for five minutes a day) actually make sense within the single page and best of all I want to do them!

I especially like the book's focus on ways to build up a a positive self-image. I read a lot of technical psychology books but Steve offers ways to affirm one's strengths that don't need hours of study to understand.

All in all, you may not be able to use everything in here but you will almost certainly find something. Even a seasoned personal development reader will find something they can use and add to their reportoire. Well done Steve for writing the book and we look forward to the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Will Challenge Your Thinking, December 29, 2009
This review is from: 100 Ways To Develop Your Mind: The Psychology Of The Mind And How To Develop Your Mind To Change Your Life (Paperback)
Recently, I got this book and wasn't sure what to expect. But I loved the title and I am someone who always wants to learn, grow and continue to develop my mind. That's exactly what this book did!

One thing that I loved about this book is that it was quick-hitting and easy to read. It's not a book with a ton of pages and fluff. It provides 100 quick strategies to help challenge your thinking and develop your mind. Please understand that not every single idea in the book was relevant to me, for example the "Quit Smoking" chapter, and they may not be for you but overall you will gain tremendous benefit from reading this book. For example, a few of the chapters I really enjoyed were Do the Thing You Fear the Most, Stand up For Yourself, Talk To A Stranger, Carry Yourself With Confidence and Stop trying To Multitask.

In short, I highly recommend this book if you want to continue to develop you mind and do it in several varying and fun ways.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and surprising, January 12, 2010

I'm not going to steal your time here, as the other reviewers already squeezed the juice out of this gem, but I'm going to tell you that, as a constant reader of Steve's blog, watching this book growing like a wonder here was absolutely amazing. I know Steve as a blogger for more than 2 years now and I'm one of his fans, so to speak. But a book, well, that's something completely different. Especially a book about something so personal and complex as our own mind. It's not even remotely an easy task.

I'm totally charmed by how the author put it into words and I highly recommend it to anyone in search for self improvement. It's written in a funny and entertaining way and it provides real value. The book in itself is the result of the techniques described, as the author, as opposed to the large majority of self-improvement gurus, does practice what he preaches. All in all, a refreshing and astonishing piece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enlightening and Definitely a Good Read, January 1, 2010

Well - I admit when I first got this book, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. I'm all for positive thinking and keeping my mind open but I was unsure that this might be a little 'dry'.

However - all I can say is, honestly - 'wow'.

It's so funny how things listed in this book seem SO obvious... yet we don't see them even though they're right in front of us. Chapt 96.. that felt like a sucker punch reading it because it was SO applicable to me, as well as a few others.

#s 10 and 46 I really liked - In fact it actually affected me: For about the past almost week, it seems like things have been going wrong left and right - for example, our toilet started leaking (after several other issues in our house this past week), and both my hubby's and my response was, "yet another thing!" Then I read your book, and honestly my thinking/mindset has improved since away from the negative... and I've already experienced positive results professionally.

I could point out so many other things - I think I enjoyed the fact that (whether intended or not), there's a bit of humor interspersed which definitely kept it entertaining. I rarely give anything a 5 - and I felt this was a definite 5. In fact, if I generally don't feel it's a 5 - I don't even bother posting a review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick and powerful read!, January 1, 2010
This review is from: 100 Ways To Develop Your Mind: The Psychology Of The Mind And How To Develop Your Mind To Change Your Life (Paperback)
This book is for anyone that suffers from low self esteem, bad habits, or that just wants to add quality to their life. The infomation is presented in a quick read and easy to digest format. The book itself can be read in a couple of hours but it is the type of book you will be grabbing off your shelf for advice again and again. It really is something handy to have around the house.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great advice, January 15, 2012

Kindle Fire - This book is an easy read & has some great tips. I'm not sure I would say it develops your mind though. To me, it reads more like ways to improve yourself. Either way, anyone could benefit from this book.

I just love this book. It is one I will carry with me on my travels and refer to when I need inspiration, when I want to let my hair down and live more fully. Reading "100 Ways To Develop Your Mind" immediately helps me remember what life is really about, what is important to me. I cannot read this book without feeling excited and really good about myself.

"100 Ways To Develop Your Mind" isn't just filled with great ideas and information; it's filled with warmth, creativity, play and adventure. At times I feel like I'm playing the childhood game "Truth or Dare" and I am excitedly challenged. It makes me WANT to get out and REALLY LIVE!!

Another fun aspect to this book is that I can open it to any page, start reading, and immediately be encouraged and inspired to try to new things. The ideas are so simple that I wonder, "Why didn't I think of that?" And yet, no matter how simple they are they can drastically change our lives for the better. I try to do one thing a day from Steven's book.

I believe that doing the actions in this book will develop our minds, but it's MUCH more than that. If the suggestions in this book are taken to heart and actively used, they will change our lives. Thank you Steven Aitchison for this gem!!
